Re: Moving to Las Vegas in TWO WEEKS!

Nevada has limits on the security deposit: 3 times the monthly rent. The landlord can ask for the 1st month's rent up front too, so before you move in the maximum the landlord can ask is 4 times the monthly rent. First+Last+3 is not allowed - the last is considered part of the security deposit.

In CA I paid 1.25x for the security deposit in our first house and 1.about 1.6x for the second (max 2 months unfurnished in CA).

I'm an exchange scholar (I will be working at UNLV), so J1. I will be paid by the University, it's just the start is a bit daunting because basically the University doesn't cover any of my moving costs apart from the visa. Having worked in Academia in London up till now, I don't have a huge amount of savings for obvious reasons (badly paid job, high living costs in London).

Are you an exchange student or becoming part of the faculty?

I'm at the postdoctoral stage.

You should be assigned a contact person in UNLV that can connect you with options and packages the Uni offers to their student body and faculty. They should also be able to guide you with housing options so you have easy access to the campus.

Sometimes postdocs can get subsidised housing from their university, but presumably you've investigated that.

That's what I meant to say

Wasn't sure if all have them though.

Hmm well that's interesting. I asked my supervisor about it and she gave me contact details for the guy who takes care of international scholars. I contacted him, but he never replied...
My supervisor recommended some student halls that sometimes do short-term deals for international scholars - again, I tried to contact them but no reply.
I've asked some of the people who work in the lab I'm joining, and they both said that the area around UNLV is not so great (Northeast LV, I think). On the other hand, there is no way I can cover a massive deposit plus a car plus insurance plus whatever it costs to get a US licence...on top of that most places seem to go unfurnished, so I would probably have to rough it in a sleeping bag on the floor for the first couple of months...

I have also contacted housing directly, and they just sent me links to a bunch of hotels...

You might have to push a bit on that. Keep calling.

I don't know Las Vegas, but American cities usually have parts which are much rougher than anything we're used to. Seeking a budget hotel in Vegas doesn't sound like a good idea. Speak to your supervisor again.

..... and you chose to go to UNLV because ....?

The main campus looks as though it is just north and east of the airport.

What was the draw to this college in Las Vegas? Compared to most university towns/cities Vegas is not known for it's cultural, historical, arts/music scene. Nightlife yes.

Two reasons. One, the lab I'm joining does work in the field I'm interested in. Two, I didn't get any other offers, and prefer it to the dole. At least it will look better on my resume.

Do you have any of this info? Contact | University of Nevada, Las Vegas http://unlv-housing.com

Re: Moving to Las Vegas in TWO WEEKS!

It's the holidays....might explain lack of contact...sure there will be people there, but not everyone is contracted all year round, even on the office staff.

Doesn't the uni have a forum, where folks post flatshare/sublets? Seems a lot of uni's do these days, or the very least have a notice board, that you could ask someone to check for you.

Getting a flatshare should help save on deposit costs up front.
