Up in the morning - Get little one up - Get out the door
How long is it going to take to get to child care at 8am in traffic?
How long is it then going to take to get to job at 8:30am in traffic?
Reverse at the end of the day in traffic and maybe stop off for shopping?
I think there's a fine art to picking out the right location based on how much you want to travel every day. Commuter traffic can be brutal and wearing. How much quality time will you have at the end of the day with the little one?
Totally agree with this. We lived 18 miles from hubby's work, 13 miles from my work. Daughters school was 5 miles away, it would take 30 minutes minimum to do the 5 miles to daughters school, then it would often take hubby an hour to do the remaining 13 miles. It used to take me around 25 minutes to do my 13 miles. On the way home, I used to pick daughter up from school, so 23 miles all in, it would often take me an hour and a half, an average of 4mph

Thanks for the comments on the SFV. Image isn't something that worries me. Heat, on the other hand, well we went in October and I almost needed a jacket in the evening so yes, I might want to rethink that one.

Traffic, well, I hate commuting so we can safely say location will be key here! However, it also depends on SWMBO, i.e. where she can work. No doubt a compromise somewhere. Initial plans are to rent so we're not too tied down for too long.

San Dimas, didn't see much of, though the reservoir nearby was pleasant and is appealing for walks etc.

All subject to the big V.

San Dimas is a long and tedious drive in rush-hour traffic from almost anywhere.

Also the heat is too much for most people.

My daughter went to school (and camp) in Tarzana, in the summer it would often be over 110 when I would pick her up at 6pm.
And vice versa -- people who love the Valley feel a mild contempt for those who live elsewhere. In my circle, I find a mild contempt for people who live on the "Westside." [Old joke were on t-shirts saying "There is no life east of Sepulveda." BTW, I think Sepulveda is the longest street in LA county with the same name].

And some people like the heat -- that is what the Good Lord invented swimming pools for.

Also, the Valley has those "microclimates" also. During college I would commute between Sherman Oaks and Northridge. In Summer, Northridge was 10 degrees F hotter and in Winter 10 degrees colder. And Northridge was always windier [no small thing when driving a Type I VW with swing axles].

Point being -- the areas vary a lot and one really has to be here.
