Hi,

Looking to move 2 small cavalier king charles dogs from London to Austin in the near future. What is the most cost effective way to do this ? Just been quoted 1200 gbp to do so...,.

Are they considered brachycephalic? If so you may have trouble shipping to Texas because of the heat.

Do any of the major airlines deal direct with the customers allowing you to take your pet as excess baggage ? or is the only option to use a company that is associated with IPATA ?

They are crosses between cavalier and bichon frise and dont snort like pugs..... so doubt this will be an issue.

Even if KCS are allowed to fly, the airline will not fly them during the hot weather months.

You could try the QM2 to NYC. Depending on the time of year it may then go down to Florida and you could drive from there. Best solution if they cannot fly, although the ship’s on board kennels get booked up quickly.

I love Cavs, I have had them for over 40 years. My daughter has a B&T.

try Lufthansa. That's how we brought our dog over to Austin (Welcome!) but 6 years ago and she was charged as excess luggage IIRC 300 euros. However, we had to pay an extra $450 to bring her on the 40 minute flight from Houston to Austin.

I haven't heard of any pets not being allowed to fly to Austin in the summer. Yesterday was 98F....
Norwegian and BA fly direct to Austin, I would check out their policies/prices

In the past several dogs have died when the plane they were in was delayed in hot whether.

This is from Delta but most airlines have a similar policy.

Temperature Restrictions:
Delta will not transport warm-blooded animals as cargo if, at any point,(origination/transit/destination) during your pet's transport, the temperature for the day is forecast to be less than 10 degrees F (-12 degrees C) or greater than 80 degrees F (2 degrees C). There are no exceptions to these temperature restrictions. All live animals traveling when temperatures are under 45 degrees F must be accompanied with an acclimation certificate.

The above applies to United too. Also even mixed breed Cavs are not allowed to fly.

There have been many posts on here from those who have used the QM2 with good results.

The problem is they book up very quickly, but you can go on the wait list. A couple of years ago the amount of kennels was increased.

The kennels are very basic, but you can sit with your dog during the dayand take it outside in the doggie area. There is a lamppost and fire hydrant.

Edit: By basic I mean the dogs are kept in crates.

It’s a great way for dogs to travel. I’ve been on the QM many times but not with a dog.

A few years ago a little old lady, dripping in Chanel, boarded the ship in NYC. Behind her trotted a guy dressed in a Cunard bright red uniform. He was carrying a red velvet cushion with a small white dog perched on top.

We saw her several times around the ship, always accompanied with the guy carrying the cushion and dog.

I presume it was an Assistance Dog as normally dogs are confined to the kennel area.

An assistance dog is a dog you call an assistance dog, there is no legal definition. Cunard may have their own policy on such matters.

I have no idea what the criteria is for ADs but most if not all cruise lines recognize them. They are allowed in all areas of the ship including the restaurants.
