Default Moving to Boise with USC wife

Hi All,

Been browsing here as I'm looking to move to Boise with my USC wife next year (She's from just across the border in WA) and have already messaged some of the posters who have kindly contributed here.

I'll no doubt have more questions myself but wasn't sure about starting a new thread or if commenting on this one is considered 'hijacking' ? Unlike the OP I won't be moving with my employer though once we get my Visa I will begin applying in earnest as I would like a job to move to, in reality this is my biggest fear even though my parents in law say we can stay with them as long as we need to. I'm currently in (Automotive) engineering but any Mechanical Engineering (or similar) job is the same skillset. I know Micron are based in Boise as are Wabtec (Trains), anywhere else?

I had to google IAS! Is that the route most people take or do some buy a car when they get there?

Thanks again , let me know if it's better to start my own thread

P.S. Forgot to add, we'll be visiting Boise this December to check it out and get a feel for the place.

Outside of a few highly specialist occupations it is difficult if not impossible to get potential employers to pay any attention to you job applications at very least until you have a local address and phone number, and even if you borrow your in-laws address and register a "local" VoIP phone number, you not being around to attend interviews is going to be a problem. If you're planning on visiting you could try applying 1-2 months ahead of your visit with the hope of scheduling interviews while you're in the area.

In short, if you try applying for jobs using overseas contact details your application will be ignored/discarded, I would almost bet my life on it.

I presume you saw the thread on Boise earlier this month. I lived there for 12 years until recently. I guess the mechanical engineers I have dealt with are more along the lines of designers of HVAC systems for commercial buildings, so not sure what your exact line of work is. As well as Micron, HP are a big tech employer in Boise.

Probably what I would do is do some web research a few month before your visit to find out who potential employers might be, then a couple of weeks before you visit, call them to set up an "informational interview", which would be just for you to get an idea of what kind of skills the companies you want to work for are looking for, and also see if you are someone like they might like to hire in the near future. FYI, quite a few companies shut down between Xmas and New Year, or even if they don't lots of people go on leave. So an early December trip would make more sense. It'll be pretty cold then by the way. Don't let the summer temperatures there fool you into thinking it's warm all year.

As for cars, plenty of used car dealers in Boise, or buy from Craigslist. Second hand cars aren't cheap in the USA though!

Great idea, thank you! Will definitely do that. We are visiting for most of December so I will try and arrange early December visits to respective places. It;s the same where I work now. I know how cold winter can get from my last few christmas visits, but at least it's not a damp cold! Yeah car prices shocked me a bit, so I may begin with hiring one or bowwowing the inlaws 'spare' lol.
