Moving to Atlanta with Family and Pet
Hi All
We are moving to Atlanta this summer and would like some advice on the relocation and logistics.
1. Any suggestions of good packers and movers from UK to USA.?
2. How much time does it take for the stuff to reachnits destination. I have heard the waiting time is several months ?
3. How much would it cost to move stuff for a family of 4. Mostly clothes and some furniture.?
4. What is the most comfortable way of taking our PetLabrador Retriever.?
5. Any suggestions or best practice for relocation.
Please share your experience and advise.
Many Thanks
GT

Welcome to BE. This thread may help. Note that it may not be possible to fly a pet into Atlanta during the heat of summer.

I have flown my dogs internationally before. You will need to engage a professional service associated with a veterinary practice to complete the paperwork required and to update any required vaccinations, pet chipping if not already done, get this wrong and you will be in for a nightmare. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend a service provider. When we returned from the USA we used a provider in Texas website I can provide by PM if interested just so you can read up on the requirements. They were very good. I would like to say though shipping pets globally is shockingly expensive, moreso than one would imagine and also if the outside heat in your destination or departure airport is too high or too low the airline will not accept your pet for travel on days with high heat for the safety of your pet. Atlanta has very hot summers.
My advice to you about moving and taking clothes and anything else is only keep what you can carry in checked luggage with your airline. You can check at extra cost a couple of extra bags per person travelling. Shipping anything via a mover is likely to cost way more than you could replace the items for. My last move from the UK I took only what I could get into 4 suitcases and got rid of everything else I had and replaced them here in Hungary. In 5 years time my house is now fuller than it was back home.
Good Luck with your move and welcome to the forum.

I do not believe anyone will fly a pet into ATL in the summer, and honestly, you wouldn't want them too either. It's routinely 34-37 (90-100) degrees here in the afternoon during the summer, which is when European flights arrive.

Re: Moving to Atlanta with Family and Pet
We moved over to just South of Atlanta and used Pickfords - paid for part of a container, leaving most electronics and larger furniture like beds behind. We paid <$10k for everything we moved and it was between 6-8 weeks if my memory serves me correct. All went pretty smoothly - everything boxed and neatly slotted into the container, everything arrived in the same condition.
On the pet side, you have specialists or airlines like Virgin will take them vis their Cargo on the flight with you. We did this for a cat. Had to have the pet passport sorted and drop them in a container with food and bedding etc. about an hour before you'd normally check in. We then had to go to a Customs building just offsite from the airport to get the documentation sorted, then back to Delta Cargo facility (right next to the terminal and easy to get to) to collect the cat. All in, it was about 2 hours after we left the airport that we were on our way with our cat. From memory, there was also a dog on that flight next to her. She was a bit quiet for a while but soon over the stress.
You'll be ditching a lot of winter clothes and probably need a substantial uplift in the amount of summer clothes you have. Atlanta area hits British summer weather around April and matches Florida during peak summer before returning to cooler weather as you get into November. Even then you may find some days in December that are shorts and t-shirt weather.
Do not underestimate the cost to essentially start again with many items - mostly electronics.

My wife complains that only about 2 months of the year (Jan & Feb) are anything other than 'shorts and t-shirt weather' as far as I am concerned
