Good luck with the move. As above though, wheels are virtually compulsory in Houston, just to get to work let alone having a social life. I'd strongly recommend looking into this and asking for a car in the deal too. To be honest, I haven't ever ridden the bus in Houston but I don't want to...

It's easier than you think, and soon you'll be more worried about the other drivers than yourself!

Yes - I know that a car is a requirement in the USA - I am currently in Australia and its pretty much the same here (in terms of needing a car). The company I will be working for has arranged for International Auto Source to contact me (tried to get a car deal but the company would not budge) - though not sure I want to buy new or lease. With $ I am getting to move to Houston think I will buy a 4-5 yr old car for cash once I get there.

You can't live without a car in Texas.

Not easy on the highway, especially when some drive like crazy in Houston.

What I meant was getting used to driving on the "right" - yes you are right that it's wearying to drive in Houston full stop.

....as in most big cities. After driving in LA we don't complain too much about Houston anymore

I've learnt to nap whilst driving. Since everyone else is driving crazy, my weaving car looks normal.

I don't know whether to be more scared or strangely reassured!

Houston driving isn't really much worse than any big city, as SM said. I had a harder time in Manchester, but then again I was driving on the wrong side of the road. (I'm American.)

Don't be scared, it really is not that bad. A GPS system, or just taking one day at a time learning about new areas, and you'll be surprised how quickly you'll become confident

Thanks for that. I had thought about maybe taking a couple of driving lessons over there just to build up my confidence, but I think I will just try the one day at a time thing and gradually build up to going further afield. We are considering staying at San Paloma appartments. Would I have far to drive to get to the nearest shops?

I don't know... but in general, if you can avoid peak driving times and take the smaller roads, you won't be as stressed as if you are on the "freeways" (sort of arterials, motorways) or driving in peak traffic. Also, you can practise driving on Sunday mornings as a lot of the population will be at church.
