I have just moved from there to Charleston, SC. Asheville is a ridiculously overpriced, hill-billy sh**hole. I really cannot see why so many people think it is wonderful. There is honestly nothing to do unless you enjoy "hunting and the outdoors" or walking around Biltmore house..."Americas largest private home".

You will find that there are no jobs there except for healthcare at Mission Memorial Hospital or the school district, but my wife who is a teacher could not get a job all the time we were there except at the technical college part time.

Property taxes are obscene, as is NC and local sales tax, gas tax, and the schools are crap. There are no zoning laws in Asheville so you find trailer parks next to $600,000 houses.

I wouldn't even waste my time considering it, Asheville is a dump. Forget it.

Yes they are, especially when viewed from a hot-tub on the cabin balcony with a glass of something cold and bubbly. First place myself and the good lady went together, and a good base for family and friends to explore from who are coming all the way from the UK. Plus, there is a brewery for the reception...

Plus ... whilst the ladies are getting their hair done , the boys can go go-karting and get photo's of them selves in kilts next to the General Lee...

Sheila and I married in Townsend, just a few miles from Gatlinburg. We stayed in Gatlinburg though... in a nice cabin with a hot-tub!

The picture's not great, but you get the idea!

Wow. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that about Asheville. It's actually famed as a liberal/artsy kind of place and is a legitimate whitewater kayaking/hiking/mountain biking mecca. Lots of good restaurants and galleries, if that's your thing. In fact, Outside (a liberal, outdoorsy magazine) has voted it one of the best outdoorsy towns in the US for the past few years:
http://outside.away.com/outside/dest...asheville.html

Of course, YMMV, everyone will have a different impression. You've actually lived there, so what do I know.
