Re: Movie money from UK to USA
I have HSBC accounts 'linked" in the UK and the US so my transfers take place instantly. If you have Premier status (i.e. > $100k USD minimum) you can get the fee waived. Note: you can have the minimum in investments, retirement accounts or other accounts, it doesn't necessarily have to be $100k liquid cash).

For any new payee from you online account, Halifax sent a code to your mobile - you need to input this code before you can progress the transaction. This mobile number MUST be a UK registered number, the system will not send codes to an overseas number. The reason the Halifax branch manager gave for this is that they are only a national bank, not international.

What's a Lloyds/Halifax profile? My account doesn't mention Lloyds anywhere - maybe that's the difference as Lloyds is an international bank?

I think unfortunately you were given incorrect information by those branch managers - I didn't speak to them to ask, I just changed my contact details online and it works perfectly.
I have accounts with both Halifax and Lloyds Bank, they're all part of Lloyds Banking Group anyway and you only have one customer profile if you have accounts with more than one of their brands.

Doesn't really matter anyway, the OP can sort it out with Halifax keeping both our experiences in mind. He needs to do that before he leaves though, and he needs to be very sure of Halifax's conditions as an expat account holder.

I think the difference here is your customer profile includes an international bank (Lloyds) - mine doesn't. I know that Halifax is part of the Lloyds banking group, but the Halifax brand stands alone as a 'local' UK bank, and that's the only account I have in the UK. Both Branch managers suggested opening an account with Lloyds to overcome the code thing, that wasn't a sensible option for me.

Revolut is also a good way to transfer money. You sign up an get a GBP current account in the Revolut app, you can convert from GBP to USD, and do a free transfer from Revolut to your US bank.
This works well for smaller amounts. For bigger amounts (let's say 50k+), a currency broker would be better.

Remember that whether the fee is waived or not makes little difference unless the amount transferred is small. It's the exchange rate that matters.

We felt the same until we went in to see them and they told us through a combination of accounts (including a decent retirement account) we could get to the minimum. They even waived the minimum for the first six months until we could get the funds transferred.

We've generally been happy with the bank but like all banks (or business or restaurants) there are occasionally annoying things. We use them for US, UK and HK banking so it's quite easy to have all of these accounts linked together for moving money. Our Hong Kong account is a "multi-currency" account which allows us to internally convert $ - £ - Euro, etc and then transfer to other accounts without a fee. Works pretty well.
