Moved to Texas?

Re: Moved to Texas?
Lived in Austin, TX for past 8 years, and been visiting since 1988. I moved to Portland, OR in January for a number of reasons, first one being a new job!
Texas is a big place, so it would be helpful to know what part of TX you are looking at!
My snapshot - Hot, Bible belt, aggressive drivers, republicans, guns, Spanish is the first language in a lot of places, poor standard of housing construction (but this applies to the whole of the US IMHO), expensive electricity, humongous property taxes, culturally and geographically isolated. Did I mention it is hot? It is one thing to come on a week or 2 of vacation, quite another to suffer through month after month of smothering heat that literally makes you gasp when you first step outside on an August afternoon.
It’s not really that it is better or worse, just totally different, don’t for one minute think that just because they speak a whacky English dialect that they are even distant cousins!
There are lots of Brits in TX and I'm sure some of them will be along in a moment. Also bear in mind that 50 miles from any of the larger conurbations will take you into the boonies, where inbred knuckle dragging Neanderthals driving Dodge Dually trucks with large exhausts and George W Bush bumper stickers (or NoBama bumper stickers) are still in the majority and that's just the womin!

Hey - I hope you're not accusing me of being shitholeist. Houston's gorgeous, and doesn't smell much at all after the third or fourth day.

+1 , sorry Brits in Houston, but come on, it is a smelly, flat, ugly, hot, humid dump. Can't really comment on Dallas but let's just say I don't live in Texas anymore!

We like it so much we are planning to stay - GC's in the works. I happen to really enjoy Houston, depends what you are looking for I suppose. Yes it's hot from June - October but then we don't have 20ft of snow to deal with in the winter and we get a day off just because it's cold . Great shopping, restaurants, theatre etc, we find the cost of living comparable with Aberdeen (hometown) it's just that the monthly bills are divided up differently. Add to that a great big house, 2 brand new cars, eating out 3-4 times a week and I am a happy camper!! Hubby got offered the chance to move to South Florida a week or so ago and me and my dude were both in tears at the thought so it must be a little bit not shit .

Hiya Cliff
Lots of expats move from the UK to Texas. Houston seems particularly popular at the moment (except with tonrob!). Houston is a nice place. Friendly, lots to do etc. You need to be able to drive to get around. You also need to be able to put up with the heat and humidity.
Any idea where in texas you are thinking of? Then someone might be able to help you more.

As a person who has actually been to Texas for more than five minutes, I'm not permitted to comment at all on what Texas is like as a nation. I'll leave that to the people who have seen something on TV about Texas, or had a layover in the Houston airport, that didn't leave them throbbing in that special way, therefore quickly and irrevocably determined that Texas is shit and you will be shot by Dick Cheney and raped by Laura Bush (simultaneously) if you ever dare step foot in the Lone Star state.
As for the people in the thread who live in Texas, and claim to love it here, please ignore them as they are obviously clinically insane pathological liars who have escaped from one of the many insane asylums that we have in Texas, and where most of our population actually lives and posts to the internet from.
The Long Horn is a big cow that can actually stab you with its head, which is a neat trick, but only if you are standing off to the side. If you are standing directly in front of a Long Horn it will probably just blow snot all over you, which is a somewhat less neat trick but still rather clever for a cow. Other than the head stabbing, there isn't too much that it does except to be very big and snorty in general. Due to the recent superbowl depletion of our road de-icing sand, we will be grinding up Long Horn horns and throwing them on the roadways for the ice storm that is scheduled tomorrow. Also included in the road grit will be fine powder mix of liberals (that took a wrong and deadly turn at Sante Fe) and unicorn eyelashes, because we hate and kill everything that is beautiful here in Texas.

I lived there for a year, it was like I had been dropped on another planet. But then again I had moved from California.

Oh yes, the utopian California, where every good thing happens to everybody 24/365/7/52.
