Re: Move to California from London
Hey I live in Clovis. It and Fresno have merged into one now, with Fresno having about 500k population and Clovis 100k. There are certainly bad areas of Fresno but you don't have to experience them if you don't want to. I have been here 6 months now and have to say I'm really enjoying it. I got a job in the local University (Fresno State) and I love it. That obviously also takes care of the health insurance.
There are some really nice parts of both cities. Nice restaurants, parks, bars etc. There is plenty to do as well. I have joined an indoor football (soccer) league and I'm looking at joining an outdoor one. 90 mins up the mountain and you can go skiing, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are all pretty close as well. The coast is about 2 1/2-3 hrs away which sounds a lot but not really in the States, with some great Vineyards on the way.
I guess we have been pretty lucky considering I got sorted with full time benefited employment so quickly but its like a lot of major cities, there are good and bad areas. Granted it has quite a large 'bad' area but as I said I have never needed to go there so it may as well be on the moon.
Whereabouts does your uncle live?
Give me a shout if you have any more questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Hi again to all, thanks for info - very good reality check for me and others who are looking to move to the USA as well. Ryan - cheers fella, I just know uncle is in Fresno CA 93722 is the usa equivalent of his postcode (I think...) hope I haven't just given his address away. Quite put of now to be honest - wouldn't have found this info from web searches and articles.

www.city-data.com can tell you a lot about the area you are looking in, with average household income, property prices and crime rates graphed against the state average.
greatschools.org can give you a view on the education system locally.
These aren't a complete picture and are a blunt instrument but a a good point to start from.

A 5 digit zip code in the form of XXXXX is the zip code for thousands of households. A 9 digit zip code in the form of XXXXX-YYYY usually indicates an address for about 10 households.
You can use the following link to determine the 9 digit zip code for an address from the address plus a 5 digit zip code. The postal service prefers 9 digit zip codes for more accurate automated sorting.

At my new rate, I'll be paying $257 a month in Utah, so just over $3000 a year.
Covered California, the new health insurance exchange under the Affordable Care Act shows a "silver" plan (I didn't look into the full details) as being $300 a month in California for a 41-year old single person. If you are 30, it drops to $261 a month.
Oh, and for giggles, I entered a 4-person household - two adults aged 40, and 2 kids aged 8 & 5 - came out to $2,176 month, less a $1,543 tax credit from the Government, so $633 a month.

Addresses have both a 5 digit zip code and a 9 digit zip code.
