Angry Mothers Birthday this week, big guilt time for me

My mother will be 90 years young or is it old, this week. Due to various circumstances, I/we will not be going to UK, too much going on here in US. I have to say, I'm already having major guilt trip. Missed birthdays, weddings & funerals, does make life of an Expat difficult.

I know how you feel. When my dad turned 80 I was not able to go home. I felt awful. I finally got back 2 months after his birthday. It's always harder when you have kids to go back when school is in.I'm sure she knows that you would be there if you could.

I know what you mean. Found out recently that both of my younger sisters in the UK are planning to get married sometime next year (not to each other i might add ).

Due to the cost etc, will only be able to attend one.
Guess I'll have to flip a coin!

Can imagine, I missed both my grandparents funerals!
Not that it's the same but could you buy birthday ballons with 90 on them put a birthday hat etc on and have a web-cam chat.
To your mum it will be the next best thing seeing and talking to you! That is if the birthday is at someone's place with a web cam and if no webcam I'm sure you can arrange one to be somewhere where your mum will be, even if it is in a nursing home!?

Damn, you just reminded me it's my dad's birthday on Wednesday - I'd better come up with something good to get him asap. Luckily I think I have a bit of time because I think my parents are visiting my sister this week.

I suggest you start a thread on the subject (can you tell i'm a bit bored this afternoon ?? ).
We need to know his age, so start a thread with some of his interests and hobbies, etc on it too and see what you get - you might be pleasantly surpirsed.

Don't want to pile it on you Frank, but have you thought of anything for wifey yet? Now that's one you don't want to miss or you will be in trouble.

I'll just hope that my sister got him something that she can add my name on - I just sent her an email. I'm trying to find out where they are so I can talk to my mum to get her input. Usually just get him a jumper or something for the computer.

He's really difficult to buy for - he'll be 56, not many interests outside computers, fan of the Beatles, just retired but has started his own printing company (printing the local free paper that he originally started a few years ago).

Ok - I'm working on it, though I usually do the same thing with my sister

She lives at home on her own. Has fullsize house, she's not leaving. Goes, out, goes shopping.
