Default Montauk NY Advice?

I have to go to Montauk for a rugby game in a couple of weekends. Given it is 3 hours + from Manhattan I am thinking about making a weekend out of it.

Anybody have recommendations on what to do, where to stay etc? I won't have a car so hoping it is small enough that we can manage without a car.

Thanks!

Quite likely to be off season, so be prepared for quite a few places to be closed or have short hours. It's fairly small and quite walkable though.

I have heard that Montauk is really good for eating and drinking, with some great seafood restaurants (according to some drunk guy in a bar). I also hear fall is a great time to visit.
We want to head out that way at some point - but the 3 1/2 hours on a train to do just over 100 miles has put us off so far.

Take lots of money. Don't expect to bring much of it back!

Take a look on Google maps where the station is and where the rugby game will be to see if it will be walkable. If the game isn't right in town then there may not sidewalks, which would make walking challenging. It is not uncommon for a postal address to be miles away from the city which the address is nominally "in". We live several miles beyond the city limit of the city in our postal address, and it would take us about two hours to walk to the down-town area, the first hour of which would be a challenging and, quite frankly, dangerous struggle along the ditches and banks of the narrow verge/shoulder of a fast main road.
