My understanding is that the receiving bank automatically reports incoming transfers of $10k+ to the government.

We have moved six figures using UKforex.com with no problems at all.

I notice on my XE.com account I have a trade limit of around $50,000 at any one time. Although I should imagine if I had to move more than that in one go, I'd have to just call them.

When we first came over, I used Lloyds Bank to transfer a big lump - as others have said, if the money is in there, they will do it.

Just talked to a branch of barclays where I'm staying & they said they'd charge me £25 just for transferring my money to the other bank (that'll transfer it to US) seems they intend to make something out of my transferring my money to US.

Will contact my actual branch tomorrow & check if there's a way around this, seems a bit of a cheek given how much I have in deposit with them & the crummy interest rate I get 1.24%

Not only will they charge but their rate will be lower as well. The spot rate this minute is $1.5603, my broker would give a rate of $1.5470 I bet any High Street bank will be around $1.50. In fact NatWest will not give you a rate it is what it is at the time they transfer the money.
