Yes, you can. Especially on price. Fi is *only* good if you are a LOW DATA USER. If you use more than 1GB a month, there are far more attractive options available from prepaid providers like Cricket / ATT / TMUS / MPCS.

At least Project Fi has access to US Cellular which fills in the gaps in NC quite nicely.
TMUS will have access to US Cellular soon. Watch this space.

That's only rumored and it's possible it'll be like the AT&T roaming and subject to the domestic roaming caps though. Either way if it happens it'll certainly improve things for T-Mobile customers

When I have visitors I always get them a T-Mobile sim card and activate it online (!) on the $30 monthly 5gb, 100 minutes and unlimited texting plan. You can stream music "for free" and the 5gb is enough for everything (my dad always uses it for navigation as well).

However, I don't know about the coverage in your specific area, though Atlanta is probably very well covered by T-Mobile (as it is by all the others).

I myself use ATT gophone prepaid, $60 per month smartphone plan, including 5gb data (rolling over whichever I didn't use the month before), unlimited talk/text, + $5 for 250 minutes of international calling (also rolling over whatever I don't use).
I use it for navigation (even though I have some maps stored offline), streaming music, watching videos and of course, email, facebook, news, playing, etc. pp and I normally have 1-1.5gb left over.

From Friday that's being raised to 8GB data. AT&T GoPhone Bumps $60 Plan to 8GB Data, $45 Plan to 4GB | Droid Life

My Fi bill this month was a few cents over $7 because I got a credit because my charger went wonky. Normally I pay about $2.50-$3.00 a month in data, $20 for the phone plan and a few dollars for taxes. I did do extended payment on my phone and buy the $5 a month insurance as well so my typical bill is right around $52. I'm indifferent about it. The price is decent but the service hasn't been all that great. It does seem to have got better in the last few weeks though.

My wife uses Cricket and pays $35 a month for the 2.5GB plan. She likes it although it does seem to have an unusually high rate of outages for for hours or days.

I don't think $50 a month is appropriate for the level of service you're receiving. How many gigs are you using a month? ATT GoPhone does $54 [1] for 8GB of data now. That's damn competitive. They also do 4GB of data for $40.5 [1]

[1] Use callingmart.com for 10% off every month. Easy to set it up automatically.

The actual phone bill is always between $22 and $23, the rest is phone financing, optional insurance and tax.
