If your phone is unlocked, you can get a sim card for a PAYG from most phone shops.

Not much option for data, but in NYC, you should have plenty of free wifi hotspots, so just use that.

Depends how long you're coming for as to whether it would be worth it. If only a week then the international charges on your home country tariff, combined with free wifi in McDonalds, Starbucks etc might be cheaper. If a month and heavy use then PAYG is easy enough to get.

I'd go for "access" rather than "excess". Excess internet usage abroad would cost a pretty penny one would imagine!

You travelling on the VWP?

Either way, without a massive deposit on anything and no US credit history, you'll struggle to get utilities. You could get a corporate housing, hotel or a sublet easily enough though.

He said "B", presumably in terms of the visa. But I agree, same same.

Does make you wonder exactly how much living and working is going on.

From the post history it looks like:
1. He's going to the US on a B-1 visa.
2. Then setting up shop, working for a few months.
3. Applying for a GC
4. Leaving the country for a year or four while the GC is processing.
5...?

Sorry, but that's what it looks like! Why don't you, iornse, indicate your long term plans (if you want to) as it's a bit confusing!

If you are entering the USA on a B-1 visa, you are not coming as a visitor. You are coming to do some specific business activities, although you CAN combine tourism in there.

You can probably buy a pay-as-you-go phone. What kind of services those offer, I'm not sure.

As for renting an apartment and getting cable internet, it's allowed, but it will cost you a lot because of your lack of US credit history.
