Milwaukee.

So, I'm looking at a possible job in Milwaukee. Can anyone tell me anything about it. A bit of reading suggests it's a pretty nice place, on Lake Michigan, with a bunch of festivals in the summer. Anything other positives? What about negatives, other than cold, snowy and in the Midwest (which I'm already used to.

So far it looks like the job is more what I want to do, and they should be paying more. The location isn't ideal, but better than where I am. Just trying to figure out if it's good enough to consider the move.

TIA.

This caused a bit o' controversy on this thread: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ight=milwaukee

I personally like the city, but apparently there are plenty of other people who don't!

So, the complaints are that it's cold, snowy and small? Still seems better than here, where it's colder and tiny.

All I know is that it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Plenty of Ethnic Festivals at the Henry Maier Festival Grounds. The most popular Festival is Irish Fest with many great bands turning up. Gaelic Storm are there every year and the Saw Doctors have been there on a few occasions. Downtown is okay, but, the area does have its fair share of violent crime.

You may wish to look at living in Mequon, which is about 15-20 minutes North of Downtown on I-43, or Waukesha, which is about the same, albeit West on I-94.

We live south of Milwuakee, in Racine/Mount Pleasant. It's about 20 mins from the airport and 35 mins from Downtown. Racine's Downtown is a real mixed bag, like Milwaukee. Lots of lovely little shops on Main Street, but go one street too far in any direction and you hit crime central. We live far enough out though that our neighbourhood is nice and safe, and quiet.

I think the same can be said for any city, to be honest.

It's not Houston. What else do you need to know?

That's the problem. Now if it was Houston he would have had pages and pages of opinions. Most of them from people that have only spent a day there or have never even visited..:p:lol:

Do either of you have an ill-informed opinion of Milwaukee to add. Be sure to include the words "cold", "snow" and "midwest hell-hole".

Thanks for the info. I'll bear this in mind when I visit.
