We lived in Memphis for 6 years, returned two years ago, we lived in Germantown, about 20miles outside the city centre. Beautiful place to live, extremely safe with great facilities. We loved Memphis, however as previous posters have stated, there are a lot of areas to avoid. Beale Street is a superb night out, live blues music excellent and graceland is definitely worth a visit. . It is horribly humid in summer which limits what you can do and the mosquitos will eat you alive. If its for 3-4 years I would go for it, you will love it.

Oh no, the mosquitos always go for me, that is a definite minus. Thanks for the useful info.

Eventually it improves. After 21 yrs in Texas I only get bitten 10 months of the year now instead of 12.

Eat marmite. Personally I'd sooner be eaten alive by mosquitos though

I don't know, Martin hates the smell of it so I don't eat it on holiday!
