Memorial Weekend Getaway?
Well.....the weather continues to be crap here in the NY metro area (cool and rainy) and I've spent most of the afternoon planning our Summer holiday.
My son gets an extra day off this Friday as one of ths 'snow days' wasn't used up. My husband has now decided to take Friday off as well. I've been looking at the flight prices for next weekend and they're extortionate just because it's a Bank Holiday weekend...eg. *one way* prices from here to Fort Lauderdale $339 plus taxes... :scared: All the stuff coming up on http://www.site59.com is also v. expensive for next weekend. :( I guess we will end up driving somewhere instead (and braving the nightmarish traffic I suppose) but we can't think of where to go...casinos are out as we will have a 16 year old with us (although he enjoys playing a game of poker LOL!). Any ideas/suggestions warmly welcomed! |

Just a suggestion PD1 |
Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
You are close to the city and the train system and with that Amtrak. Couple of suggestions:
1. Train to Philly for the weekend. Visit the City of Brotherly Love. Lots to do there of interest to both adults and a teenager 2. Short drive to Lancaster, PA to Amish country. Relax at a nice inn, plenty of good restaurants in the area, outlet stores a plenty. You can take the backroads and not even use the turnpike. 3. Take Amtrak from Penn Station to Boston. If you want to drive, take the backdoor in by going 684 to 84 to the Mass Pike just outside of Boston. 4. Or take the Taconic Parkway up to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Visit Stockbridge, Lenox, Pittsfield, Amherst. Again the backroads. Taconic to the next to the last exit -- route 295. Turn right and follow straight to route 31. Hang a left and it comes to Route 7 .. Take 7 straight into Lenox 5. Travel by train to the Island. There are lots of seaside places there such as Montauk, the Hamptons, Shelter Island. 6. A train to Rhode Island to visit Newport or a ferry ride over to Block Island I'm driving to Jackson to visit dad on Saturday. The worst of the traffic will be over by 3 pm Saturday afternoon.

Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
If you want decent weather, avoid RI and Boston. It's been a washout here for weeks and is cold cold cold. :(

Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
What's the fare to Dallas? granted not as much to do, but it's been nearly 100F in this state the last few days.

Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
Shame you cant come to Ft Lauderdale as you could have popped in for a cuppa as we are about 15 mins from there. Could've shown you the sights of sunny South East FLA.

Well its 90f here and 82f in the SEA......no pansy heated pools for us, we like to bathe with sharks and Man-O-War, and the odd boat of refugees. |
Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
I loved the summer holidays when I lived in NYC. That's when all the NYers cleared out for the Hamptons, Jersey Shore, etc., and left Manhattan nearly vacant for me to enjoy!

Aww what a sweet husband you have! I think we're all tailgating before and then onto that pub that anotherlimey mentioned. Read Manc's post at the top of the USA forum for more details. Manc bought my tickets and we're all sat behind one of the goals. Would be nice to meet up :) Sarah |
Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
I'll be in the local English bar on Saturday watching the match and am taking part in a memorial day parade on Sunday. Hope it doesn't rain too much. :D

Gordon Bennett! The sun is shining at long last.
We've decided that we're just going to go on a 'mystery tour' and just see where we'll end up. We've just thrown some clothes into small cases and we're ready to go. We will head west on I-80 so will drive to PA and possibly end up in Ohio or something LOL! Toodle-oo.... :D |

We all deserve some sun! |

Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
Himself says he's not driving over the holiday weekend 'cos all the idiot drivers are out in force around here ...LOL! Apparently the traffic accident count goes up at a ridiculous rate over this particular weekend. So we'll hire a pile of DVDs, buy some wine and Scotch and hide behind closed doors.
We'll be going up to Kansas for the Smokey River Festival (arts and music) in early June, so looking forward to that instead. Drive carefully everyone!! Enjoy!! :) |
Re: Memorial Weekend Getaway?
Well.....we ended up in Cleveland, Ohio - 500 miles away!
We were astonished that there was hardly any traffic on the roads. We mostly stayed on I-80 to get there and just took a couple of deviations to get lunch and to avoid single-lane traffic at some roadworks. We left at 11am and arrived at the hotel 6.40pm. On Saturday morning we went to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, one block from the hotel....it was v. good. I then went to the Science museum next door with our son as they have the 'Bodyworlds 2' exhibition on. I saw it a couple of years ago in London's Brick Lane (it was a much larger exhibition in London) and even my son (who hates going to museums) agreed that it's very educational and informative. It's where people have donated their cadavers after they've died to be 'plastinated' ie. preserved in various conditions - mostly in slices to show how the body parts function. They also do this to animals...there were a couple of camels on display in Cleveland...the horse with the human rider on his back is in Chicago at present. It really is astonishing to see perfect lungs and cancerous lungs for example. On Saturday evening dad and son went to see the Cleveland Indians play baseball against Oakland and watch the fireworks afterwards...I stayed relaxing at the hotel and going for a swim. We returned yesterday...took a leisurely drive through rural Pennsylvania (Rt 6) through the Alleghany mountains and State forests...it was like driving through Wales...and hardly any traffic at all and not a single traffic jam. We've had a relaxing day at home (weeding the garden!) and hubby is off to run with the hash this evening...whilst I watch the Coronation Street episodes he's downloading for me. :) |
