Memorial Weekend Getaway?

Well.....the weather continues to be crap here in the NY metro area (cool and rainy) and I've spent most of the afternoon planning our Summer holiday.

My son gets an extra day off this Friday as one of ths 'snow days' wasn't used up. My husband has now decided to take Friday off as well. I've been looking at the flight prices for next weekend and they're extortionate just because it's a Bank Holiday weekend...eg. *one way* prices from here to Fort Lauderdale $339 plus taxes... :scared: All the stuff coming up on http://www.site59.com is also v. expensive for next weekend. :(

I guess we will end up driving somewhere instead (and braving the nightmarish traffic I suppose) but we can't think of where to go...casinos are out as we will have a 16 year old with us (although he enjoys playing a game of poker LOL!).

Any ideas/suggestions warmly welcomed!

Stay in town

Play in a tennis tournament, Thursday til Monday (indoors or outdoors)

Eat, drink, be merry, and try and stay in the lines

Also, today 97 degrees, gonna be much worse by the week-end

Luvvly,

Snowing in Aberdeen Scotland last week, let me think where would we rather be, Aberdeen or Houston ???

Just a suggestion

You are close to the city and the train system and with that Amtrak. Couple of suggestions:

1. Train to Philly for the weekend. Visit the City of Brotherly Love. Lots to do there of interest to both adults and a teenager

2. Short drive to Lancaster, PA to Amish country. Relax at a nice inn, plenty of good restaurants in the area, outlet stores a plenty. You can take the backroads and not even use the turnpike.

3. Take Amtrak from Penn Station to Boston. If you want to drive, take the backdoor in by going 684 to 84 to the Mass Pike just outside of Boston.

4. Or take the Taconic Parkway up to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Visit Stockbridge, Lenox, Pittsfield, Amherst. Again the backroads. Taconic to the next to the last exit -- route 295. Turn right and follow straight to route 31. Hang a left and it comes to Route 7 .. Take 7 straight into Lenox

5. Travel by train to the Island. There are lots of seaside places there such as Montauk, the Hamptons, Shelter Island.

6. A train to Rhode Island to visit Newport or a ferry ride over to Block Island

I'm driving to Jackson to visit dad on Saturday. The worst of the traffic will be over by 3 pm Saturday afternoon.

If you want decent weather, avoid RI and Boston. It's been a washout here for weeks and is cold cold cold. :(

What's the fare to Dallas? granted not as much to do, but it's been nearly 100F in this state the last few days.

Shame you cant come to Ft Lauderdale as you could have popped in for a cuppa as we are about 15 mins from there. Could've shown you the sights of sunny South East FLA.

You clearly hadn't been doing something right... it's 98f here and 90f in the pool. Or perhaps it just that we have more kids peeing in ours to keep the temperature up! :scared:

Well its 90f here and 82f in the SEA......no pansy heated pools for us, we like to bathe with sharks and Man-O-War, and the odd boat of refugees.

I loved the summer holidays when I lived in NYC. That's when all the NYers cleared out for the Hamptons, Jersey Shore, etc., and left Manhattan nearly vacant for me to enjoy!

We had the same dilemma and as we've always wanted to see what this place is like: http://www.thefrontparlour.com/english_tearoom.htm we decided to book a room in New Haven, CT for the weekend.

Why don't you come to Chicago to watch the England Vs USA footie match. Me and the other half are going, as is Lion in Winter and Manc with his family. We're going to have a look around Chicago aswell on Sunday, should be fun!
