To add to the experiences:
I usually flew into larger international airports - JFK, IAD, etc. In these cases I merely said I was there for a vacation - which was true - I just happened to be spending it with my girlfriend, and later, my fiance (the same person, in case you were wondering!).
Later on, I flew into CLT a few times as it was a tad more convenient. A bit of a quieter airport so I decided to be more explicit and say, "visiting my partner".
The only follow up I ever got in 3 or so entries at this POE was, "what's her status?". Even after saying she was a US citizen no further questions were asked.
In my mind, I think it always helped my confidence that I brought letters from my employer with me showing ties back to the UK. So, my tone of voice was confident and I answered questions without hesitation.
