What's been the plan for your coverage?
You can request a copy of your medical record from your GP.

Re: medical insurance
My husband gets 90% of his policy dues paid by his company, but has to pay 100% for the rest of us. We pay nearly $1000 a month for a family of five. My premium is the highest ($5000 a year) probably because I am a woman in my thirties therefore at risk of pregnancy?
It's a good policy so we pay - I haven't seen any better deals.

Re: medical insurance
Whether it's cheaper or not would depend to some extent on what your medical history is like? Never a day at the docs and you might be alright anyone that remotely sniffs of payouts and you will end up with high premiums, pre existing exemptions and all that malarky going it alone, no?

Re: medical insurance
Are you certain it's as much as that? To get my wife on mine also looked very expensive, until I realized it assumed my wife had a job and was refusing to take the insurance from her job. Once I updated the system to show she was unemployed, and therefore didn't have an alternative, the premiums dropped dramatically.
You may still be SOL, but worth checking.
Even at $600/month, I would still go with that to be honest... it's just so much easier to go through an employer.

Google Blue Cross of Illinois - they will give you a quote online. I think you could get a plan cheaper than that if you a healthy young male. Rates for males are usually cheaper than for females. When you get a job, you can get your own policy, so it wouldn't be for that long would it?
If you have a preexisting condition, then it would be best take the plan you were offered.

Re: medical insurance
If you get individual medical insurance, perhaps it's cheaper. But you then will not be covered under HIPAA legislation. Basically, that legislation gives you some advantages.
For example, if you got an illness, and ended up not keeping that individual policy, the NEXT insurer would not cover your pre-existing illness. If you were on your wife's policy, and then she switched to a job with different insurance, or you got group insurance through a future job, they WOULD have to cover everything.
I would strongly suggest doing it, at least for the short term, if you are able to do so.
Probably a fair price for a decent policy in any case.

It's going to depend on what the cover is, sure you can get cheaper, but you get what you pay for....look at the deductibles, co-pays, and all the other small print to see if it's worth it to you.
Also being johnny foreigner ain't going to make a difference, what will is your age, if you smoke, previous health conditions etc.

My alien husband is covered under my health care insurance at work. I pay around $378 a month for the two of us, including health and dental. Smokin' deal, evidently.

Being a "foreigner" without a green card disqualifies one from many many insurance policies - very few individual policies will touch a K-1.
Group policy is a better deal in many ways.

yup, we're now paying $400 a month on the missus' insurance, which ain't bad, not quite as good as my old insurance, but it beats paying the $1100 a month that cobra want.
