Default Medical Insurance

A friend of mine is wanting to emigrate to USA but is worried about his insurance premiums, as he is a diabetic. His health is A1 - ie no problems. Has recommendations or contacts ???

The diabetes would be classed as a pre-existing condition, for a certain length of time at least.

He could get health insure, but it would be exempt from covering pre-existing conditions.

For example, if he were to break his leg in a car accident, then they'd pay out.

If he didn't eat enough sugar and went into a coma and was hospitalised for a few days then they wouldn't cover it.

If he plans to work for an employer, there will probably be no problem. Individual health insurance is another matter. He will likely have to pay a higher premium. Even someone in excellent health faces extremely high payments on an individual plan. My small group plan (my wife and I) is currently pegged at about $500 per month and is set to climb by at least 43 percent in March. The situation, to put it as delicately as I can, stinks.

Some employer-related policies will not have a pre-existing condition clause. You'd really need to ask the employer (a) do they have a health plan, and (b) what is the policy regarding pre-existing conditions. Also, ask when coverage starts. If it starts when employment starts, and he comes over before the start of his contract, he may not be covered.
