Marriage date and J2 visa
Hi, i'll be going to the US for a couple of years to take up a research position at a university. I've been told that i'll be on a J-1 visa. Looking through the information i can see that my legal spouse would be able to join me either immaediately or at a later date on a J-2.
The thing is that i am not yet married to my girlfriend. Would it be possible for us to apply for a J-2 after i have been in the US for some time, we are planning on getting married 5 months after i am due to take up my position? or is it neccessary that, to get a J-2 visa, we must be married BEFORE i get my visa and that my original application and hers must go in at the same time?
If we have to be married before i put in my original application, are there likely to be problems regarding the fact that date of marriage is so close to the date of visa application? She has her own job which will run until next summer, so would not be coming out immaediately.
PLUS, at the current time we are both living in a 3rd country, i.e., not the UK.
I'd be grateful for any help/advice that anyone can give. Anyone have similar experiances?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, she can get a J-2 once you are married. Whether the third country
consulate will issue the visas or require you to return to the UK for them
is up to them though.
