You're seriously thinking of returning to the US? Guess you're not dunroving, eh?

I'm in Kansas City and do know a little about Manhattan. It's not to far from where I live and is a decent day trip for those that live in Manhattan. So if you are worried about not having much to do then there's always KC for the weekends.

"The state of Kansas gets a bad press. It is huge and empty and mostly flat.

In the summer it is uncomfortably hot and prone to tornadoes. In the winter it can be bitterly cold."

They seem to be into 'religion' too...

I'd have to say that this article was not fair or balanced. You can find religious fanaticism in every state of the union. From snake handling in the Applachain states, to religion being used to reinforce racism in the south, an religion used to separate those from the world in a cult like atmosphere of fear and distrust. Kansas has received a lot of press lately for a certain church's congregation protesting outside of soldiers' funerals. When I saw that it made me furious. I couldn't believe what I was seeing as protesters where walking outside with posters thanking God for dead soldiers. It really hit home since my father is a retired soldier. I was disgraced that fellow Americans would take that stance. Despite that I know that it's not representative of Kansas as a whole. Kansas I find is a good state. Would I live there myself, probably not because it's too laid back for me. Are there any reasons not to. Not that I can think of. Take this from someone who is a native and isn't writing an article with only brief observations. Just know, Kansas is NOT the UK. If you move there thinking you'll find any semblance of such. You'll be in for a rude awakening. Move there with the idea having complete immersion into Kansas society. You'll have fun, flat land and cold weather included.

I drove the entire length of route 56 in KS once, it took all of one day and the morning of the next, small towns sparsley scattered, I stopped at one truckstop for the night, realised I was the only truck driver among a hoard of nasty Mexicans and promptly carried on (F**K the log) to Dodge City.

I can't believe that I'm defending Kansas City. I'm originally from the DC area and find myself stuck here due to my sister needing housing in the area until she completes her PharmD program here. Other than that I feel it's my obligation to point out a few things that make KC livable.

Some factoids about Kansas City...

* More fountains per capita than any other city including Rome.
* Home of....
Hallmark
Sprint Operational Headquarters
AMC Movie Theaters
Cerner
H&R Block
Garmin Industries (GPS)
Honeywell
* Very historic point in the development of Jazz
* Location of the Negro Baseball League Museum
* There is a point where you can see two states, four counties, two major rivers (Missouri and Kansas [Kaw])
* Famous for it's boulevards
* The largest city in Missouri (a measure of square miles for the city limits not accounting for size of metro area)
* Home of President Truman
* You mentioned BBQ, Gates, Arthur Bryants (yummmmy), Winslows and others

As for Kansas, well let me see here. It's flat. The cities aren't large. It's blah blah blah. It's a state to go through from Kansas City to Denver. Nothing spectacular really except at night. There is no sky glow to speak of when you are far into the state and away from the city. The stars just pop out of the sky en force. It's the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long time. As a lover of astronomy it's always a treat to see the sky without light pollution. It comes from living in the city proper for too long.

Very good but Kansas city is mostly in MS and on the eastern edge of the state.......... the rest of the place is desolate

FYI, MS is the abbreviation for Mississippi. MO is the abbreviation for Missouri. I don't want you talking about one state when you mean another.

Manhattan is located north of I-70 between Lawrence and Topeka. I hear it's a pretty nice college town. The population fluctuates with the terms.
