And dogs -->

A Reno man shot and killed a pit bull Monday, saying it twice charged a woman just blocks away from the Veterans Memorial Elementary School, authorities said.

The 35-year-old woman had been walking east on Wonder Street on her way to work when a 70-pound pit bull that had been running loose with another pit bull knocked her to the ground, police said.

The woman ran to a home in the 700 block of Balzar Circle in search of help and a man chased the dogs away with a stick.

When the woman left the house, the first pit bull again charged her and lunged at her numerous times before the man returned with a .357 magnum pistol and fired four to five rounds at the dog, police said.

This is the problem.
I am totally opposed to the use or ownership of firearms.
But luckily this happened in the USA and this guy went home and got his 357 Magnum and blew the dog away, this saving a life.
So I can see that sometimes they are needed.

But... What the hell is this bloke doing with a magnum in his house ?
Or.... Why do people breed these sort of dogs ?

There are arguements for and against both.

Boy dies after school stabbing

Press Association Tuesday November 4, 2003

A 14-year-old boy died today after being stabbed inside the Lincolnshire school he attended, police said. A 15-year-old student at Birkbeck school, in North Somercotes, near Louth, was arrested and taken to Skegness police station in connection with the death.
The glaring difference between the UK & US is that this makes national news in the UK. The same murder in the USA would be local news at best.

Why does someone need a gun? Or a big dog? Or a fast car? Or a private jet? The answer lies in individual rights. As long as one uses possessions responsibly, and doesn't trod on the rights of others, it should be no business of the government what one owns. Now, if one uses a gun to shoot innocent people, or a dog to attack innocent people, or a fast car to run over innocent people, or a private jet to fly into innocent people, I say throw him in jail and toss away the key. Otherwise, who cares what someone owns.

I think a story like this one would make it to the Associated Press wire, which is the U.S. equivalent of Press Association. It would then likely run in a city or statewide newspaper. The U.S. is a much larger country, in terms of both population and geography, than the U.K., so a statewide story here could easily reach as many people as a nationwide story in the U.K.
