Man to bet all on Vegas roulette spin

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- A British man who has sold all his possessions, including his clothes, will stand in a rented tuxedo on Sunday and bet everything on a single spin of the roulette wheel.

If he wins, he doubles his money. If he loses, he will be left with only the television crew documenting his every move.

Ashley Revell, a 32-year-old Londoner, said he was worth about 75,000 pounds ($138,000) after he sold everything in March.

"I thought I was worth at least 100,000 pounds," he said in a telephone interview from Las Vegas, where he is putting in a week gambling about $3,000 in a bid to raise his pot.

By Wednesday, he was down $1,000.

Revell said he had planned to have a friend videotape his bet-it-all spin, but Britain's Sky One television decided it was worth a short reality series, called "Double or Nothing."

Sky will not pay him, he says, but a crew has followed his preparation and will cover the spin live on Sunday at the Hard Rock casino in Las Vegas. It also plans to follow him for a month afterward, win or lose.

Revell, recently a professional gambler, said he decided to take a big plunge while he was still young and raised the stakes as high as possible, including selling his clothes.

"I like to do things properly," he said.

He had not decided yet whether to place his money or red or black on Sunday afternoon.

"I don't know, man," he said. "One of them is going to be the right thing to say and one is going to be the wrong thing."

He added that if he won he would probably take his winnings rather than spin again.

I hope he loses everything he owns, and has to fly back on his return ticket in the grubby rags he arrived in. Upon returning to Britain I hope he loses his job for being a nobhead. The council and DSS refuse to give him any welfare because of a crass publicity stunt, he then cannot get into any casino in Britain because of his stench, and is left to rummage in the garbage for food. And in 2 years is last seen sleeping rough in Barnsley.

The dickhead.

At least play a game that gives the player a slightly better advanatge against the house. Roulette is one of the worst games to play in a casino as far as getting a % of your money back. I once was brave enough to slap a 100 dollar bill down on black after a nice spell of winning. Fortunately for me, it won. I wouldn't bet at the hard rock either. I'd tell him to go to the Strasophere tower where they have single 0 roulette tables which puts a few more odds in the players favor.

Of course, having said that, if he is only betting red or black, then its 50/50 chance.

Well a 0 (or 00, if applicable) still loses, so the odds are slightly less than 50/50. About 47% on a double-zero wheel.

I don't know too much about Roulette, but isn't the payout on "Red or Black" a lot lower, i.e. less than double the wager, because it's the "safest" bet?

What a tosser!

Talking of gambling... I'm off to Vegas in a couple of weeks to get married and will hit the casino while we're there. What's the best gamble stuff for a total novice, never done it before person.

Craps gives you more time at the table than roulette (depending on what you bet on and what is thrown, you can be there for several throws of the dice without winning or losing). You'd need to study a little to get the hang of the game, but if the stakes are low you can get an evening of entertainment without losing (or winning) too big. You also get to participate (throw the dice), unlike roulette.

p22

The payouts
A bet on one number only, called a straight-up bet, pays 35 to 1. (You collect 36. With no house advantage you should collect 37 (38 in the USA on double zero roulette wheels).
A two-number bet, called split bet, pays 17 to 1.
A three-number bet, called street bet, pays 11 to 1.
A four-number bet, called corner bet, pays 8 to 1.
A six-number bet, pays 5 to 1.
A bet on the outside dozen or column, pays 2 to 1.
A bet on the outside even money bets, pays 1 to 1.

Black or Red is an even money bet paying 1 to 1

And this is the difference playing with just a single zero table compared to a table with a zero and a double zero.

The house advantage
On a single zero roulette table the house advantage is 2.7%. On a double zero roulette table it is 5.26%

My wife is the craps player. I'm more into full pay video poker machines. I'll be in Vegas at the end of april after a quick stop in Laughlin.

Since this fool evidently has more "cojones" than gray matter, why go red-black... I mean if he really wanted to get fixed up for the rest of his life, why not go fo a number- like 00, and get the 36-1 (?) payout.

I recall the couple in Illinois who bought $25,000 scratch off lotto tickets with their wedding gift money, which turned into something like $800 in prizes, which of course eventually ended up in $0.00.

High/low, even/odd/red/black play even money
one chip on number pays 35 -1, plus original bet = 36, theres 38 numbers, hence the house edge. In Uk theres 37 numbers = smaller edge.

Pilgrim, theres no 'safe bet' on roulette

the bets on roulette in america, if playing the standard zero/double zero wheel have odds that in practicality are the same whether betting on even chances or betting on splits or on the numbers via a long term basis. There is no advantage to playing one type of bet compared to another, unlike in the UK where the odds are better on even chances, although still a 1.75% advantage to the house compared to 3.5%.

Blackjack and dice offer the best odds against the house, with the former in certain casinos actually having odds that can better the house advantage, if playing on a table with certain factors - eg. one deck shoe, dealer stands on soft 17, double on anything, split any pair multiple times, and of course the biggy - card counting.

Mind, in my experience, the average punter will stick on 16, against a dealers 7 card showing !!!! so these factors for the majority dont even apply........
