Floorboards! You were lucky to live in a house with floorboards! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing, and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling.

When I were a lad we used to have to get up before we had even gone to bed, sleep 6 to a bed, walk t'mill 55 miles, up hill both ways. Have nowt to eat but bread and water, get a good beltin' off our dad every day. We'd work 24 hours a day, no lunch. Our mam would send us off wi' a doorstop incase we got hungry, not a slice a bread but a REAL doorstop.
We never had luxuries like fizzy pop and sweeties. Lake water n' grass that were our treat.
