The only thing is, a newer car might not always be better. My old '98 Malibu had about a 10% discount and yet my newer '05 Honda Accord doesn't get any!
According to State Farm, it has a worse record when it comes to injury claims. I can't quite figure that out as it has front AND side airbags unlike the Malibu! However, an '05 Toyota Camry does get the discount
And yes, the credit rating does seem to affect the cost. I'm paying $582 per 6 months in SC "fully comp"

Of course now, with that restriction lifted, I can pretty much get auto insurance from anyone.

Shopping around is really the best bet.
I guess all the States vary.
I am on my husbands insurance.
But we have two vehicle's on it. We are with AIG.
Its $391 for 6 months.Which is good.
Others want $700 for 6 months.
So I'm sticking with these right now. Our Homeowners is with Allstate but they couldn't beat our Auto price.

We shopped around and got the cheapest quote from Progressive. We have been with them 2.5 years and have been very happy with them so far although we have not had an accident yet... I suppose that is when you find out exactly how good a company is.

It is also worth reviewing your coverage every few years. Despite it being illegal not to have motor insurance in most states there are a lot of drivers out there without it. For that reason uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage is well worth the small extra premium. I deal with personal injury cases from car wrecks on a daily basis and see no end of cases where someone gets hit, their vehicle is totaled and they suffer some serious injuries yet the other driver has no coverage at all. Yes, you can sue but if you get a judgment the chances of recovery are pretty slim unless the other driver has property and money stashed in the bank.
From my dealings with motor insurance here, it can be more complicated than in the UK.

Have GEICO quote you on homeowner's house insurance.

The woman at GEICO confirmed that I had had my license for over three years but then went on to say that my current policy did not take into account me being an "inexperienced driver". I stopped her right there and quoted from a page on my GEICO policy that had identified me as such and that this may be taken into account.
At that point, the woman put me on hold. A couple of minutes later, she continued the conversation and quoted me an updated premium.
Currently, I'm paying $1400 p/six month period because of the "inexperienced driver" penalty. Removing that from the policy lowered my premium to a little over $750 p/six months. This is for two vehicles.
The moral of the tale is that it pays to be persistent and to read back information from the auto insurer's policy. The lady at GEICO, in my opinion, was trying to fob me off with some crap but after I quoted from my policy, there in black and white, she could no longer ignore that I was indeed being penalized for being an "inexperienced driver".
However, to keep GEICO on their toes, when renewal time comes around, I shall be asking my homeowners insurance provider to quote me auto insurance. It will be interesting to see if they offer an even lower premium than GEICO.

Yes, I will concede they are a bit more expense but for the quality of the care we receive, we won't change. At least that is our viewpoint.

In fact I wouldn't go anyplace else for our insurance.
Now what happens in your State may be another issue.

You're all argueing the toss over different companies all sitting in different states with different insurance rules / laws and regulations.
Been employed and insured by State Farm for 4 years now. great claims service, but it should be for the extortionate rates they impose.
then again, you do get what you pay for. If you want the lowest rate, chances are you're gonna get the lowest service.
Incidentally, I know I've just switched jobs, but just had an interview for a job with Citizens (and an extra 10k a year........)
