Re: Looking to move to Florida
Property tax is set at county level. My property tax in Santa Rosa county in NW Florida was about $1,200 on a $250,000 house, so around 0.5%.
Homeowners insurance was around $1,200 a year. If you live in a flood zone, expect that to double and if you want a house on the beach, double it again.
My house was smallish at around 1,600 sq ft but was very well insulated by US standards and we had solar panels and a pool. Our average power bill was $150/month. Water about $25/mo, gas negligible ($10/mo). Garbage service was $45/quarter. We were on a septic tank. If on city sewer, expect water to increase. We also had a well for irrigation.

Re: Looking to move to Florida
Hi All,
I've been away on business for the last few weeks but I'd just like to drop out a quick thank you for all the comments, much appreciated. Lots to consider going forward but we are looking at this fairly long term.
Anyway thanks all, will be back on if any more questions pop up,
Andy

Indeed, and that's an understatement:
Cassandra warning:
Pay lots of attention to Hurricane Doria - not only its impact on Florida - but also the Category 5 devastation its wreaking on the Bahamas
(Remember that's only 50 miles away)
It might make sense to consider whether that's the future new normal during the annual hurricane season.
Even if Florida ducks the bullet with Doria - what's occurring right now in the Bahamas may very well happen next time in Florida.

Please open a new thread for your questions. We also have a forum for nurses...
https://britishexpats.com/forum/nurs...ccupations-72/
We ask that you keep all immigration questions on the forums, and do not ask for people to contact you privately. Incorrect information can have serious consequences, if you ask on the forums it gives our members the chance to correct erroneous info.

We ask that all questions and answers regarding immigration matters are kept on the forums and not via email or PM. If incorrect advice is given on the forums, there is a good chance it will be corrected by others.

Re: Looking to move to Florida
I lived in Florida a long time.
$700 in groceries for a family of 5 is significantly low.
Property tax depends on county. Generally $1,000 to $2,000 per year for an average house but it all depends on the appraised value. Texas is abnormal.
Windstorm insurance is a significant expense in Florida.
You won't be driving to see the hockey Panthers and back in a day if you are living in Orlando or Tampa.
I agree the level of detail, this far out, with no visa in place, is premature.
