I haven't been around in a few years, I doubt anyone remembers me. Hope everyone is doing well.

Me and kidlet did DCF in 2005 and have been permanent residents since then. I'm finally getting around to filing for naturalisation. I can't remember much about it, but vaguely remember something about if I naturalize, the kidlet automatically does too.

Not sure if this is still the case? I can't seem to find the correct answer on the USCIS website (by the way, the link to Citizenship For Children in the wiki is broken). I sure hope that's not because they changed the law on that! Does anyone know?

Also, I'll be going through Cleveland, OH. Anyone else recently?

Your child will automatically become a US citizen, as a process of law, the same day you do if: s/he is under age 18, entered the US with an immigrant visa, and is in your physical and legal custody... yes!

I do have another question - do I also send in a copy of kidlet's PR card with the application, or anything else for kidlet?

Looking back at my wife's application for citizenship, she sent nothing with regard to her son, my stepson, other than to list him and enter the required information on her N-400 form as required. (Along with her stepchildren, my children by a previous marriage, who are already US citizens by birth, and who are older than she is.) He became a US citizen at the same time she did by action of law as Ian has explained.

Cleveland, eh? I'm not sure, but it may be a while after your interview before a naturalization ceremony is held.

Thanks. I started doubting when I realized all I have to mail in with the application is a the fee, two passport photos, and a copy of my PR card.

That seemed like less than I thought, but then I realized since I waited so long, I skip over all the paperwork you need to send in when it's marriage based.

When you say 'a while', are you talking weeks or months? lol (gets nervous )

Thanks guys (male/female )! It's kind of cool that y'all remember me. Things are a bit crazy around here, so I don't think I will have much time to spend here again... It was always so much fun to be here though.

Plus, I'm not even sure how helpful I would be anymore... to my shame I must admit I seem to have forgotten quite a bit of what I used to know!

My N-400 will be hitting the mail in a little bit. Can't wait for this to all go through! It's definitely less stressful than any other parts of the immigrations journey so far. I'll at least keep you posted.

Huntergreen - i have a question and i am going to apologise in advance if my question is daft as i have only begun properly looking into this process today and have not read much of the materials from the USCIS website - most of it is in my laptop bag waiting for the weekend....

You state in your very first post that you will be going through Cleveland OH, how did you make this determination? I see from the form that the postal address for the n-400 is dallas but i can’t seem to find anywhere regarding where you go for the interview or ceremony, should you be successful? Is it determined by the USCIS office closest to you, in my case dahntahn Pittsburgh...!

Also whilst I am here, anybody have any suggestions on how long this bad boy might take - looked at some of the processing times for regional offices and it say 5 months - is that a fair assessment. I just figure it would be nice to be able to vote in the next presidential election and based on the enormous amount of overwhelming candidates i want to get a head start on thinking about it....

Current processing time is about 6 months from filing N-400 to attending the interview. How long it takes after that for the oath ceremony date depends on how often they have them at your location.

For some applicants, not for all. By the USCIS District or Sub office that is assigned to your place of residence. In some cases that may not be the office that is closest to you.Regards, JEff

Cwooloff, not a hijack, you're fine. I went through Cleveland with my 'other' USCIS paperwork (removal of conditions) - it is the office that handles cases for where I live, like Jeff said. This was true for the I-751 and now also for the N-400.

Some offices that handle certain paperwork don't process N-400's though - but when you choose the office which you dealt with previously from the drop down menu at USCIS.gov, and it includes the N-400, you'll 99% sure be dealing with the same office.

I hope this makes it clearer... It isn't my best description, it's hard to think around this horrible sinus infection I'm having. lol
