Long term gifts for a baby

Long term gifts for a baby
A couple family members (here in USA) whom we are close to are expecting their first child.
When I was born I was gifted a UK Treasury bond from my aunt and uncle and I think it was a great gift. It gave me a some cash when I was 18 (IIRC) and sparked interest in economics, saving money etc.
From researching Treasury Direct bonds it seems a PITA as I'd need to know the baby's SSN - hardly a surprise and i'd not give out my baby's SSN never mind ask for someone else's.
Does anyone have ideas of a similar gift here?
I guess setting up a college fund and the baby as a beneficiary could work? I'd just end up having to maintain it for the next 18 or so years...

A bullion coin or bar, of metal and weight of your choosing.
Starting as low as a silver dollar (1oz, .999oz pure silver), which is currently just over $20, is a handy gift for the sprog of a casual acquaintance, and as they are issued each year, a momento of the year of their birth too.

You can do it under the parents social, not just the kids...but yeah, you'd still need to know someone else's social, so a PITA.

I always used my own SS# when I purchased bonds for my niece and nephew.
