Agree - Massive range on costs of living. Have looked at San Francisco a lot - $3k - £4k per month rental cost for what you are looking for in the East Bay area I would suggest.

And personally, I would never work low paid jobs in the US - I'd stay in the UK. I feel like in the US, generally, unskilled workers get treated very badly, have far less government assistance and have very little time off. Not a lifestyle that would appeal to me. It may not be relevant to you, but f you come out and need to study before you can get your nursing role or if your other half would be working in a nonprofessional environment it is worth considering.
