Default Letting HMRC know you have left the UK

I'm currently going through the K1 Visa process and have my medical and interview booked, but I have been looking into some of the other things I will need to do further down the line if they give me the stamp of approval.

I was wondering if you need to let HMRC you are leaving the country before you depart or can you do it afterwards? Plus anyone elses experience on how easy/difficult it was.

Assuming (!) nothing has changed, fill in form P85, pretty straightforward.

I posted mine off the day I left, should I have done it sooner or later? No idea but I didn't have an adverse reaction from HMRC so I guess it was okay.

Do it after you've left. That way if something happens and you don't leave on that date you're ok.

HMRC don’t even require you to file the P85, but it’s usually a good idea to as most likely you’ll get a modest tax refund from them.

If you do it before you leave you have to send a pint of blood as well.

I might get round to it one day, not that they'll refund me anything, and as a previously self employed chap the future pension prospects aren't exactly anything to look forward to either!

Form P85 only works if you were PAYE before you left.

Hmm, as I recall PAYE folks get a P45 from employer, which can be sent along with the P85. The P85 itself allows you to fill in earnings for the current tax year and simply declare that you won't have further taxable earning this tax year. Next tax year, you simply won't appear on HRMC radar, unless you file some other kind of earnings? Long time since I looked into it though!

Anyway. Take a P85 with you and send it in before tax year end and hope for the modest refund mentioned above.
