AFAIK, New Jersey's been the richest state for a long time. Anyone who's been through towns like Saddle River or Alpine certainly couldn't be surprised. Connecticut is full of poor areas like Bridgeport and most of New Haven, both of which balance out the ridiculous wealth of towns like Greenwich and Darien. Not sure this is news.

Re: the car insurance

I have GEICO and have had the same policy for over 30 years.

My sister, with her family's poor driving record, lives in NJ and got GEICO when it finally accepted NJ residents as insurable a few years back. She pays less for her 2 cars then we do here in NY. As for property tax, her property tax in Freehold for a 4 BR, 3 Bath, 3/4 acre corner property house is 1/3 less than what they were paying NY taxes on for a semi-attached house with a 50 x 100 foot plot 25 years ago.

So I don't see it quite the same as you do ;-)

NJ is expensive for car insurance but acturially speaking, you're all a bunch of shit drivers out there.

if you load of wankers stopped the false claims, fraud, hit and runs, 263 car pileups........then you might get lower rates

I live in NJ and have a very small three-bedroomed colonial style house in Short Hills (17 miles west of Manhatten) approx 60 years old....I think including the basement it is only around 2500 sq ft. The land is worth more than the house...and my property tax is $13,000 per year....

I'm dreading the next car insurance bill....both my husband and myself have been stopped for speeding in the last month...and to make matters worse we've already been on the driver safety course

Obviously prices will change from area to area ie the same house could be worth double in a prestigious area compared to a not so good area. I am talking about average prices. Same goes for car insurance. There are a lot of factors to be considered when you are doing comparisons.

No - we were the richest (though it's been head-to-head for a while). This has pissed me off big time - I'm now in the second wealthiest state. Someone needs to give me more money so we can regain that status
But you're right about the crazy inequities - both CT and NJ have the ridiculously rich and ridiculously poor within 30 miles or less - Basking Ridge vs Newark, New Canaan vs Bridgeport.

I'll have some money too - just to push CT back to the top!

If you're looking for rich & poor within about 5 miles - try Fairfield and Bridgeport.

Residents in Camden and Newark are probably scratching their collective heads about NJ being the richest state:
