All the Post-Dumblane 1997 ban did was remove guns from the people who were doing it legally anyway. It did nothing to remove firearms from the people who are committing 99.9% of the gun crimes in Britain.
If anything, the large scale removal of firearms from the houses of people who were legal gun owners would have increased the crime rate anyway. I suspect that if the chances of a house containing firearms dropped overnight, individuals would be less likely to think twice about breaking in.
