This tragic case devestates me (particularly as the father of two young girls in school), but (as has been pointed out) the fact is that a lunatic with a handgun isn't the norm. Killing in this country is much more often clinical and crime related... I can't tell which is worse.
It's worth noting that violent crime has plumeted in the US over the past several decades, but it still doesn't explain why it's so high here...
One more note, several studies have shown violent crime is worse in the UK than in the US, here's the results of one from the WODC:

The larger amount of violent crime is easy to explain - rather than beat each other up, people just shoot each other!

Hiro 11 has also diluted the stats with violent crime stats. I'd say you can't get more violent than having your life taken away by being shot;

Maybe it's just me though

I'd say forget banning guns and just ban truck drivers.

One good thing though - they have been so ham-fisted in framing the new law that they have left the door wide open for the wto to lay the smackdown on them - will be interesting to see if the wto have any balls at all.
If the wto fail to act I look forward to the UK telling potential 'super-casino' operators from the US to p!ss away off.
Unfortunately that's not very likely to happen
