This tragic case devestates me (particularly as the father of two young girls in school), but (as has been pointed out) the fact is that a lunatic with a handgun isn't the norm. Killing in this country is much more often clinical and crime related... I can't tell which is worse.

It's worth noting that violent crime has plumeted in the US over the past several decades, but it still doesn't explain why it's so high here...

One more note, several studies have shown violent crime is worse in the UK than in the US, here's the results of one from the WODC:

Okay then, let's just leave it then

So basically Canadians and Swiss people can be trusted with guns but Americans can't.

Michael Moore said it, so it must be true

The 1997 ban in the UK didn't really do anything to the crime rate; if I remember correctly the rate has been rising since 1994.

The larger amount of violent crime is easy to explain - rather than beat each other up, people just shoot each other!

Hiro 11 has also diluted the stats with violent crime stats. I'd say you can't get more violent than having your life taken away by being shot;

Maybe it's just me though

I disagree abut gun bans in the Uk. They were very strict in taking guns from the demobbed troops after WW2. It was illegal to have one without a permit and permits were hard to get, except for hunting. When there was no risk of being shot by police or homeowners, the criminals didn't bother with them either. When the Crays took over london, they used knives not guns. It was the IRA that started the gun problems, with guns, probably from here. No matter, the genie had left the bottle.

I'd say forget banning guns and just ban truck drivers.

My fav bit is the way they tacked it onto an anti-terrorist bill so no-one will ever dare to oppose it.
One good thing though - they have been so ham-fisted in framing the new law that they have left the door wide open for the wto to lay the smackdown on them - will be interesting to see if the wto have any balls at all.
If the wto fail to act I look forward to the UK telling potential 'super-casino' operators from the US to p!ss away off.
Unfortunately that's not very likely to happen

You seen the (lack of) media noise where GW tacked on a pardon for war crimes for himself and his cronies onto other legislation?
