Las Vegas help
 

Daughter is getting married in Vegas in November and wants to stay in the Luxor. UK sites for booking it are all quite expensive. Does anyone over there have knowledge of any US sites where we can book good deals on hotels?

Try Hotels.com and read the small print. See what is included and what is not.

I recently got the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, for less than $140 a night, including a breakfast buffet for two.

Stayed at the Luxor when it first opened and it was nice but looked very jaded the last time I was there 5 years ago. Of course it may all have been refurbished now. I would look at The Venetian/Paris/Bellagio.

I stayed there a year ago and it seemed OK, but I must admit the Venetian looks excellent

I went to Vegas In November, and the luxor end of the strip was looking tired and somewhat unsavory. Also, it was quite far from the places you want to wander round. We stayed at the cheap Bally - which is OK, but right opposite the bellagio, and next door to the Paris and down the road from the Venetian.

The best value for money in vegas is the bus! $7 for 24 hours... :)

As Trixie said it's off the main Strip. We've stayed at the 4 Seasons within The Mandalay Bay Hotel which is right by the Luxor. MB is good and they have a great wave pool and lazy river but I prefer to be more central on The Strip. The hotels I mentioned earlier are IMO central.

Agreed. But in November, a lot of the pool areas were closed because it was quite nippy.....

We walked as far as the MGM, but the amount of Mexicans thrusting cards with naked pictures at us for strip clubs and kids trying to sell their music cds to us for $5 got too much and we turned round and went back towards the other end of the strip where it's less intense.

Good point Trixie...I have never been to LV in the winter months. Of course there is the monorail but then you usually have to walk all the way through the casinos to get to it.

Certainly this November, you wouldn't have found me sunbathing around the pool, not warm enough to get semi naked, but it was nice enough to sit outside with a jacket or long sleeves on.....

I don't have much to add, Luxor is at the end of the strip, I agree it's better to be in the middle. Vegas is not my kind of place, but fun for a wedding, congrats Mitzyboy!

Oh, and shows are not inexpensive, if someone offers you a place to get very inexpensive tickets, its time share sales.

Expect to pay between 100 - 160 bucks per ticket for a big show....

I read a couple of years ago that LV hotels no longer rely on the casinos for their income...the profit now lies in accommodation, food and shows.

When we first went to LV you could get a fab buffet dinner for a few dollars...not anymore...and the queues are horrendous. I would say the price you quoted is fairly average...I looked at seeing Elton John...the tickets were several hundred $s.

Mitz my in-law's neighbour's son got married in LV a couple of years ago...everyone really enjoyed it. For most it was their first visit.

Vegas.com is actually very reasonable. I have stayed at the Luxor twice and actually preferred being away from the bustle - and there aren't the naked cards being thrust in your face down that end because it isn't central! However, people have grumbled that the rooms there are looking old now. We stayed in the tower part of the hotel, not the actual dome thing - can't for the life of me think of the name of it!! - and they were OK as rooms go. I think you get what you pay for.
I have heard great reports of the Mandalay Bay - but it was always a tad too expensive for us.
I would love to be able to afford the Wynn or Encore next time. Great looking hotels - and he bought the pavement so no Mexican thrusting cards under your nose there!!!

Although the Wynn and Encore are nice hotels they are at the opposite end of The Strip. They are opposite the mall but not central to the Strip...not counting the run down part...Circus Circus etc.
