Re: Lack of holiday - how did you adjust?
Luckily I get 25 days so very similar to UK holidays. The big difference is that I am one of the few people here that takes all my vacation days. I feel the pressure when people ask me if I'm going on vacation yet again, but so far haven't yielded to it.
My wife came over here with her multinational company and as a 22 year employee gets 22.5 days of vacation plus the week between Christmas and New Year, so we get about the same, which is great.

My husband doesn't get additional holiday at Christmas...but due to the nature of what he does most companies don't require his services over that period so he is 'working from home'

I am fortunate enough to work from home and I get to do pretty much what I want and when I want to do it.
I am taking a working holiday in the Dominican Republic in June and although I won't be able to visit clients I will be available on phone so whether I am in the hotel or poolside I will be working... ha ha ha.

It is awesome. I never miss mid-week football, I'm home when my daughter gets in from school its sometimes like not actually working.
On the downside, I have no colleagues to bounce ideas off on a face to face basis, I do not hear new ideas as they come out in the office and I have nobody at work to go out for drinks after work with.
Ups and Downs.

My husband finds that, he is either the only one from his company on a client's site or at home....he finds that lonely and hard sometimes If he is up in NYC he tries to pop into the office to say 'hi' and remind himself what everyone looks like...well more to remind them what he looks like and that he is still human and has a life as some often forget that when they just speak to him on the phone or assign him work.....

Re: Lack of holiday - how did you adjust?
One of the questions was something along the lines of "How many extended breaks (4-5 days) do you take in a year?" Seriously, do you know any brits who call 4 days an extended break? And also there was no option for a longer trip either!
My husband (USC) is always amazed at work when he's trying to deal and get things done with the Brits and the French in the summer. Particularly the French in August, when apparently everyone is on the beach.

Thanks all for your replies. I would stay in Edinburgh forever if the weather did not get me so down...but, no decisions yet, just thinking about a lot of things - including buying a holiday property in a warmer part of Europe.
My family is in the USA...so will always have a tie there and as I get older, I think about it more and more...I've really adjusted to the culture over here however and feel way out of sorts for the first few days when back in the USA.
If any of you who have found companies that seem to be more generous than others - please shout them out so that I can look into them.
Thanks so much.

I started with 2 weeks vacation, my company allow unpaid time off too, which I am fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of. I had at least 4 weeks vacation last year.
I'm really starting to think I need to change jobs within the next year. I get 15 days paid next July onwards, and then I'll start to feel tied to the company as I won't want to go back down to 2 weeks.
