Needless to say some banks might be more amenable to giving you one. All I know is that I had to literally beg and then only got a derisory limit....once you get it though...spend and pay....
Capital One will pretty much approve anyone, they don't have high standards for their basic card.

I was denied their 'new arrivals; build credit' card . Admittedly, I didn't try for their normal base-model.

Store cards are also pretty hit or miss. I ended up going the path of the secured card.

Did you not look in the wiki about credit then?

I managed to get what I needed from T Mobile. They have a No Credit Check plan and the costs are the same as the regular ones. This only required $90 deposit for all 3 lines. Why the many people I spoke to never offered me that option in the first place I don't know.

In terms of credit lines - I've managed to get an AMEX easily on the basis of my UK AMEX and I'm awaiting my Visa credit card from my Credit Union. Also I've got a car loan from the Credit Union. Store cards are a bigger challenge and the lack of credit history is usually the issue. I'll try a few different stores.

Don't do too much too quickly. Lots of credit activity will hurt your credit score. Then you'll get rejected, and that hurts your credit score too!

As them about a plan for certain visa holders. T mobile do some system where if you hold a visa (and we are E2 so a less common type and it worked for us) they will waive the deposit. Worked for us x

It's still relevant, because it hasn't changed.

The only temp change was the ability to piggy back credit history was stopped for a short while, but even that is on the cards.

That can't be right. I added AMEX information to it earlier this year.

Your green card has nothing to with credit. Once you have an SSN you're able to apply for credit.

That's good to know, have SSN so will see what happens, just don't want to stack up refusal's on credit history.

If you have opportunity, get an Amex issues American Express UK card ASAP and after 1 year they will usually move over your credit to a new USA account.
