La Jolla, CA
Whats to do in La Jolla, CA and how long does it take to get from San Diego. We are thinking of using La Jolla as a base for a 4 day excursion next year when my mum flys out.

Takes about 20 minutes to get there from San Diego. What to do? Not sure - I go there on occasional business and seem to end up on the beach with beer and people everytime.

If you're heading through La Jolla Farms, give my grandmother a wave!
The seals have now invaded the Children's Pool Beach where I used to swim as a child.
Heading North on Torrey Pines Road, there are other good beaches all along the coast there. There's also a great hiking trail that starts somewhere on Torrey Pines Road, but I can't remember where exactly (ah, here you go).
The Scripps Oceanographic Institute Aquarium is worth a visit, even if you don't have kids with you.
According to Yahoo's What-to-do-in-La-Jolla the La Jolla Caves are also worth a visit (by kyak?) but I've never been.
I still can't believe that the Mormon Temple is the 3rd highest rated attraction in such a beautiful place though!

There's a golf course there - Torrey Pines or something. I haven't played - stayed in the Hilton Hotel that's next to the golf course. It's a lovely place ... !

A lot of rich people and old farts in La Jolla and thats about it really. If it was me I would just stay in San Diego, surely the cost is about the same.

...most memorable was going for a kayak trip accross the shallow-water lagoon which is full of stingrays, only inches below your boat!

BTW, there's a convenience store on the corner of Pearl and La Jolla Blvd that sells Cadbury and Hob Nobs and stuff. Just in case you get homesick.

Re: La Jolla, CA
I thought La Jolla is actually part of San Diego and not technically a separate city. I used to work with a company based in La Jolla, it's a beautiful town but unbelievably expensive. In fact, I think by some measures it's the most expensive town in the country.
I spent a week at the Del Coronado last year. It's very beautiful and has character (rare for a big beach resort). It still feels like a resort from the 20s. The beach is simply unbelievable: miles of empty sand. The water is very cold, though. One thing: the "Del" is nowhere near La Jolla.

I go there a lot, I love La Jolla.... great restaurants but I prefer the beaches over on Coronado..... not so busy and awesome to just relax on..... Its all in close proximity so you cannot go wrong wherever you go there.

It is lovely over there, spent a couple of weeks there on business. But it is incredibly expensive.
I think San Diego is a great place, since 1997 when I first went, and my recent visit last year, they have really grown the place immensely - fantastic integrated downtown, great nightlife, plenty to see and do, plenty of big ships to look at. The USS Midway museum is actually on the retired aircraft carrier, and worth a look if you are that way inclined.

Just found this post...sorry for the delay.
La Jolla is FILLED with fabulous restaurants - I recommend Raponggi's (not sure if that's how u spell it) which is my fave.
Will u have a car? You'll need it. Basically, San Diego is a really large area...La Jolla is just one part of it (OK, separate council, but all part of the connurbation). Not many buses. Downtown is probably 15 mins away non-peak hour.
Scripps oceanarium is nearby. Torrey Pines Golf is REALLY expensive, but I've heard that it's fab.
Del Mar is up the road....think 7 miles? that's where we are. What time of the year are you thinking of being here? There's often stuff on at Del Mar Racetrack....not just racing. Try signonsandiego.com and also do a search on here for "san diego"..there was a thread a while back filled with stuff to do in the SD area.
Feel free to PM if you want.
