L1a to H2 before H1b?

L1a to H2 before H1b?
Hi,
I need some advice. I have been working in the US since June 2001 on an L1a visa (executive transfer). The company I was working for is undergoing yet another severe round of redundancies (1/3 of all staff), which includes me. So my L1a is obviously not valid any more.
My wife is also working over here on an H1b. Should I transfer to an H2 on the back of her visa straight away or wait until I can find a new job that qualifies for a new H1b for myself?
What sort of timescale do I legaly have between my last day with my previous employer and applying for the H2 or even H1b?
Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

You have no time at all. Apply for the H-2 now, even before you are laid
off, and specify a start date of the day after your layoff date.

You have no time at all. Apply for the H-2 now, even before you are laid
off, and specify a start date of the day after your layoff date.
