L1 to green card?
I am a scientist working in the USA. I currently have an L1 visa, obtained by my employer. I would like to extend to a green card. My employer will not sponsor me as I am supposed to return to the UK sometime.
Is is possible to apply to transfer the L1 visa to a green card without employer sponsorship?

I did hear someone get their greencard from a lawyer in NC and had to pay $15,000 for the privelage but I don't know any more details and it was 3 years ago so things could have changed now.
Sorry I can't help you anymore than this.

Re: L1 to green card?
To become a permanent resident based upon employment as a
multinational manager (the permanent residency equivalent of L-1A)
your employer must sign the petition for immigrant worker, make
extensive disclosures to INS, and offer you permanent (indefinite)
employment effective when you become a permanent resident. If you are
in L-1B status your employer will probably also have to apply for
labor certification for you. While there are numerous categories of
permanent residency which do not require employer sponsorship, your
message doesn't suggest that you may be eligible for one.

There are two categories of employment-based immigration which do not
require a job offer: EB-1-1, extraordinary ability, and EB-2 national
interest waiver. See http://www.ameri-
canlaw.com/employ.html. You would
have to be quite prominent in your field, or quite important to your field
of science, to qualify.
Alternatively, you could seek new employment with an employer who is willing
to sponsor you for H-1B and then permanent resident status in the more
ordinary categories.
