Just tell me it will get better

Yes somehow it never quite works with cheddar. But I spent nearly 8 years eating old Dutch cheese so I guess I've lost my Cheddar tastebuds! (I love that they call their cheese young and old, and of course my favorite - very old!) You can buy Old Amsterdam and Grana Padano in Trader Joes. If you can bear to go in there that is!

But I adore gouda, so that sounds very good too. I'm neutral on Trader Joe's - don't love 'em, don't hate 'em. If they had what I wanted, I'd happily buy it there.
Oh and for JG - I don't actually use macaroni, I use cavatappi or some more solid pasta - and bake the thing. Does that help any?

Penne every time. Occasionally some cavatappi, or another funny shape if it's for my little un, but usually penne. Macaroni is too little for the fork!
BTW if anyone spots Prima Donna cheese anywhere please let me know!

What kind of bread are you eating? And is it the SFran sour dough bread? What kind do you miss from London? Maybe we can come up with a comparable for you. That'll be one thing better. : )

well, it's a huge culture shock as you are finding out. six yrs down the line and nope it's not for me but hopefully having a baby you will make friends and settle sooner rather than later. i'm afraid you just have to accept that this is not England and best not to even compare it. check out your local Wholefoods if you have one close by...bread, organic produce about the best around but don't go looking for marks and sparks or waitrose equivalents, they're not here. good luck

Eh. It started out with getting her out of depression and ended with a recipe book and hairy armpits.

Hey, I found good bread! It is Merita butter bread. Fattening yes, soft yes and really yum!
You still only get half a slice though. Why are the slices so tiny?
