Default Just starting to look into moving to Florida

Both myself and my partner are seriously looking into moving to live and work in Florida,we are going up to London on Tuesday to talk to one of these agency that specialise in getting you into your chosen country, this particular one specialist's in medical staff as my partner is a midwife, can anyone recommend one that could suit me,im a qualified plumber with a City&Guilds.I understand that being a midwife is a plus when trying to get into the US how does being a plumber? Will that be a help at all? Also would anyone know how busy a plumber might be in Florida,is there a shortage of them??(sorry if these questions seems silly)
Many Thanks.
Chris.

Wouldn't even bother trying to get a visa as a plumber (and you won't earn as much in Florida as in UK for plumbing), but your wife as a nurse can certainly get in with a green card and you'd qualify for one as her spouse. Quite a few people here are nurses and have used agencies to help- do a search or wait for Rockgurl to appear- she can advise.

You must be mad to want to live in Florida. I have just sold my house and I will be out of here in 3 weeks. Anyone who lives on the Gulf or Atlantic coasts must have a death wish.

Your partner doesn't need an agency to go and work in the US, can do it on your own. I am presently doing the process but moving to AZ. It is a long drawn out process and your wife needs to be RN general trained, if only trained as midwife won't stand her anything to work out there. get her to have a look at this link http://allnurses.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=75

Unless you are married you won't be able to go with her and work. She will (if qualified) get a greencard and you as spouse will qualify too for greencard

PM me if you want anymore info

My wife is a reg nurse and the agency that we came across with was www.ogradypeyton.com The process took about 18 months with some minor hitches on the way but that seems to be the normal with this kind of move. Your wife does not need to be RN general trained, the agency will take her as a midwife. One thing though all agencies seem to have difficulties placing nurses in Florida. Florida is good for holidays but would keep it that way!!!!

Do a bit of research on different areas and house prices in the states. Contact a few employers or use employment sites such as www.careerbuilder.com www.monster.com These are the ones that I used and landed a very good job within 4 weeks of getting here.

good luck

Jock

I beg to differ.... She does have to be RN trained....... OGP told me on a few occassions how it wasn't possible to go as midwife trained... Now every nurse has to go through CGFNS and if they don't have enough hours in all areas they will not get CES or visa screen. A lot of nurses training now in the UK will not be able to nurse in the US without doing some accredited courses to make hours up and they aren't doing any in the UK

taken off the OGP website

What qualifications do I need?

Be a registered nurse.
A graduate of a three-year RN training programme.
Currently working in an acute-care hospital environment.
A minimum of two year’s post-graduate hospital experience.
Fluency in English.
Good references.

If thats what the site says then the rules must have just changed. My wife went through the process and travelled with a midwife 6 months ago who is only midwife trained.

I am a Registered Nurse we also came over with OGradyPeyton and we were informed that you had to be an RGN and any other training such as Midwife only training would not be accepted by the State Boards. When I went for my interview in London another nurse with me was a Registered Sick childrens nurse and was told to obtain their RGN before attempting to nurse in the USA I hope that answers your question

The NHS is using children now?

We came with OGP took longer than eighteen months. California are desperate and she was offered placement there before taking the NCLEX.

To the best of my knowledge you do have to be a general trained nurse to pass the NCLEX as it covers all parts of nurse training including psych training.

Pay and conditions in Florida are pretty crap (in our area)

Plumbers? 10-12 dollars per hour
