Yeah you're right....

I think he may have been one of those 'Doctors' you see on The Simpsons...

Yep, my alien husband had a sudden kidney stone attack (at age 36 or so). Spent several hours in the ER. Had insurance so only paid $100 out of pocket, but the total bill was something like $15,000.

Is there a way to arrange medical insurance from the UK, so you're covered as soon as you get Stateside?!

It can depend on the laws of the State you are moving to. However we arranged medical cover from the UK no problem at all, and were covered from the moment we stepped off the plane.

Google medical insurance brokers for the area you are moving to and contact them and ask. You can also contact the medical insurers direct, but we had better advice and results using a broker.

A search of the US Forums should bring up past threads about temporary healthcare cover. Some people posted the name of the company they used.

Don't forget that you are coming to the US on green cards -- this is going to be your "home"!

Think Nutmegger was referring to the fact that you will be residents of the US and therefore cannot use the NHS if you get sick.

I really do need to stop whinging and adjust my attitude to paying for health care I know but still....

When we were in Arizona we met a doctor who advised us not to bother with medical insurance....

His philosophy was that the most likely thing to happen to us would be an auto accident, which would be covered by auto insurance. We're both young, fit and healthy (touch wood) and if we got really sick we could catch a flight home...

But something like a scratch on your arm leading to a $20k bill... scary.

Right that's it, I'll stop complaining and hijacking threads now, sorry!

Boy, what a dumb doctor.

10 years ago I too was young, healthy and fit (ran half marathons), then suddenly it was in hospital for an op. 5 days later a bill of over 30K ! Plus for 5 years after the op it was check ups twice a year and a scan every year which cost over 2K a pop.

Of course the doctor wouldn't have to worry about getting bills - his friends in the industry would undoubtedly have a "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" scheme going on.

He is coming to the USA on an Immigrant Visa. You are right, though, that the USA will be "home" as soon as he arrives at the US POE using his Immigrant Visa. He'll receive his temporary I-551 (green card) at the POE.

Andy, welcome to La Crosse, if you have any questions about the area, my wife and I have lived here for about 15 years, originally from Manchester.

And that is why in the US there is a well known medical joke which goes ...What do you call the person who graduates last in his medical school class. Answer = Doctor!

Perhaps he/she was having you on but if you do nothing in the next few weeks please arrange medical coverage. As others have stated a short unanticipated event can cost thousands. I would offer this re your doctor acquaintance. In addition to possibly get free coverage from friends in the industry. The comment about auto insurance is very misguided. It would only apply assuming the other party actually had vehicle insurance! In all cases you would become embroiled in collecting money and thats not something I would encourage anyone to do voluntarily.

Good luck, but again please get yourself covered for health. Otherwise your just gambling with bankruptcy.

If your wife has a health insurance plan via work, you should be able to get on it using the qualifying event clause. That would be the easiest, cheapest and best way since it should be immediate and will continue creditable coverage.
