But was thinking of the service industries in general: waitressing, parking valet, hotel and spa industry, hairdressers, etc. I've seen their W2s, and some of them earn far more than your average college graduate would in an office job.

a friend of mine is a barman at one of the big bars in downtown nashville, he makes $2.50 an hour minimum wage but his total income is about 60k due to tips etc

Precisely! Whatever it says on the W2, you can happily triple!

Man. thats a sobering thought!
Premium here in my part of the sunshine state has just hit $2.80 a gal in places.
As for the cost in Britain, my truck here does 14/19mpg my mid sized salloon back in blighty did around 35-38mpg. So petrol 2x the cost Mpg 2x as good. Puts it more in context. I used to spend about 25quid per week on petrol, here I spend about $50...I wonder if gas attendants get discount?

Premium here would be $3.21. You could always drive something smaller What sort of truck needs premium anyway!

Cant believe anyone currently spends only 25quid a week of petrol, unless thay have a moped.

You've got bigger gallons than us.
4.5 liter Gallon @ $3.21 = 71c per liter.
4 liter Gallon @ $2.80 = 70c per liter.

Look at the whole picture not just the price displayed at the pump.

Not really since I use it as a tow vehicle for a 6000lb trailer and I dont think a Smart Car or Mini Cooper will pull that somehow. (The mpg is without the trailer btw, with it its more like 10mpg)

I dont put premium in it I use bog standard 87 RON which is still $2.55 per gal.

Or drives only 10 miles to work and walks to the local shops instead of just driving round the corner all the time.

Hardly fair to compare then. If you are going to tow a 6000lb trailer anywhere then you are still better off doing it in the US

Sorry, guess I got confused when you mentioned the price of premium

Which would still be just as cheap in a US city...probably cheaper...as long as you avoid getting mugged.

Anyway, I wasnt looking for a debate, from my POV its a bit rich hearing people in the US complain about the cost of gas. History will judge whether you are lucky or unlucky to have a government that is not trying to reduce fossil fuel consumption by taxing it to death. Its also a bit annoying to us havenots to have the complaint justified because people choose to drive gas guzzling monsters that they wouldnt even consider owning anywhere else.

Never mind, in another couple of generations when global warming has done for us all it really wont be important.

I completely agree with you on all points to be honest.

I remember 5 years ago when premium here went from 97c a gal to $1.00. There was uproar. At the time UK fuel was about the price it is now and we had all the demonstrations about it.

Last year it was still $1.50 a gal but has gone up a buck a gallon since December.
