But was thinking of the service industries in general: waitressing, parking valet, hotel and spa industry, hairdressers, etc. I've seen their W2s, and some of them earn far more than your average college graduate would in an office job.

Precisely! Whatever it says on the W2, you can happily triple!

As for the cost in Britain, my truck here does 14/19mpg my mid sized salloon back in blighty did around 35-38mpg. So petrol 2x the cost Mpg 2x as good. Puts it more in context. I used to spend about 25quid per week on petrol, here I spend about $50...I wonder if gas attendants get discount?

Look at the whole picture not just the price displayed at the pump.

Anyway, I wasnt looking for a debate, from my POV its a bit rich hearing people in the US complain about the cost of gas. History will judge whether you are lucky or unlucky to have a government that is not trying to reduce fossil fuel consumption by taxing it to death. Its also a bit annoying to us havenots to have the complaint justified because people choose to drive gas guzzling monsters that they wouldnt even consider owning anywhere else.
Never mind, in another couple of generations when global warming has done for us all it really wont be important.

Hardly fair to compare then. If you are going to tow a 6000lb trailer anywhere then you are still better off doing it in the US
Sorry, guess I got confused when you mentioned the price of premium
Which would still be just as cheap in a US city...probably cheaper...as long as you avoid getting mugged.

I completely agree with you on all points to be honest.
I remember 5 years ago when premium here went from 97c a gal to $1.00. There was uproar. At the time UK fuel was about the price it is now and we had all the demonstrations about it.
Last year it was still $1.50 a gal but has gone up a buck a gallon since December.
