A lot of it depends on the type of job. When I was job hunting I was never asked if I had a degree. My 19 years in the legal field in the UK were good enough despite the fact that the legal system here is totally different to the UK system. At one job interview I even asked if they considered it to my advantage in the long run to go back to school to get a paralegal degree and I was told not to waste my money since experience stood for much more.

Was the national newspaper runnning a special on American girlfriends or something, every new guy on this site lately has been in the same position as you are. We hardly ever hear from women with American boyfriends (or have I been missing something?)

plus with online sites, it's a shoe in to plonk something in those fields otherwise your resume will be binned before it's seen.
