I have contacted a couple of people I don't know at big firms and most seem willing to pass on your resume especially if they get referal bonus's!
I need a life.

I hadn't come across linkedin or meetup so both are new and useful resources to me. Exactly what I was after.
Keep it coming

- Are companies more expectant that interviewees will chase them rather than the employers pursuing the interviewees?
- Do US companies welcome uninvited resumes?
- Must a person sell themselves in what would be considered in the UK, an OTT way?
A guess to some extent the answers will changed based upon industry and geography. Therefore I’m going to through in the words “Public Relations” and “New York”.
All thoughts welcome.

No harm in sending your resume uninvited - again though, unless you ring them up and hound them, chances are noone will respond to you. Try and hound the boss or higher level staff, not the crap below and certainly not the HR department if you can help it.
A great deal of americans think the sun shines out of their arses. They go completely OTT - everyone is a manager or has some other made up bullshit title - you often find that these managers and executive specialists are nothing more than office clerks, managing nothing except a few pieces of paper. It's gruelling to try to bring yourself down to that level, but thats what you have to do sometimes. In my case I got lucky, my experience spoke for itself and I got on with the employer really well, during the interview I brought up some differences between UK and US systems and pointed out there seemed to me to be a lot of incredibly crap HR people in the states and a lot of job hunters trying to big it up all the time - he agreed and we had a laugh about it. Was hired the next week.

Mrs Chandler here - Thanks for all your help with this. I have joined the PR Meet Up group and I am going along to a session this Thursday at Lily's Bar (47th and Lex) at 7pm (if anyone else is interested in coming along).
Another quick question for Loose Lips - I am having problems finding the best headhunting agencies that deal with the top PR firms. I seem to only find the ones dealing with the smaller firms - do you have ideas?
Thanks
