Job Agencies
 

My wife and I would like to emigrate to the US. We both have specialist professional careers and normally go to job agencies when we are moving around.

Can anyone recommend any US based job agencies for Marketing and Aerosystems Engineers, especially any that can recommend companies that will sponsor Green Cards?

The family member who's the aerosystem engineer probably has a far better chance getting an employment visa than the person who specializes in marketing.

I remember when I was looking for jobs, every aerospace company I looked at required US citizenship for a good lot of their jobs because of the need for security clearence.

I don't know about aerosystems engineers (a great way in would be to work for Rolls Royce aero engines and get an international transfer....this British expat did very well indeed:

(Also knew a British family out in Singapore where the husband was a top engineer for Rolls Royce aero engines, originally worked at Ansty near Coventry, transferred to Hong Kong and then seconded to Singapore for Singapore Airlines....had a fabulous expat package with RR....they even paid for their maid's salary and all utility bills!)

Probably a waste of time doing most of the agency routes because they don't have a clue about visa's....head hunters might be more clued up, but I doubt it.

Best bet is contact places directly...but with the H1, which a potential employer wouldn't be able to apply for till next April for a start date of Oct wouldn't allow a spouse to work...so best look at an L1, a company transfer visa.

I was just watching the military channel and one of the designers of the JSF aircraft was on, his accent is clearly British.

Maybe you can get on that project!

Boeing used to go to Derby and Rolls Royce for a recruitment drive for engineers as they had already been trained in the industry etc. Also advertised in local papers etc. Have no idea what level/experience etc they were/are looking at but maybe if you direct to them etc you might get a chance.

Know they still are or near the end of a hiring phase so you might get lucky.

Re marketing is it brand marketing, or highly specialised, or in the aero area etc? Depending obviously on credentials and how specialized and your experience you/OH can get a visa on that, but might be harder to find.

You don't need US citizenship in general aero industry, green card for some jobs, citizenship for not many, but I suppose it depends what specific area you are in.

Thank you all for your advice.

It is a little bit complicated in that I specialise in Mission Systems (i.e. Military Sensors/Equipment) which would make it almost impossible to get a job over there without citizenship. I have tried a few of the main companies we deal with over here (including Boeing) and nobody is interested without US citizenship or seem reluctant to sponsor. Hence the requirement for a job agency and start looking for something in the civil sector (Software Development, Comms, Radar, Acoustics, Avionics, whatever).

My wife is a Senior Marketing Manager for Professional Services (Accountant and Solicitors). I was hoping she would be able to take the lead to get us across there with her job. Doesn't seem to be coming across like that though!

Is it worth going across for a few weeks holiday and meeting with some agencies/prospective employers?

It seems you were/are more into the Military/Defense side, which of course jobs without citizenship would I imagine be harder.
Sorry only know about some things in the non military area, side of the industry. Not much help to you!!

As someone working in the military/defense sector who is not a citizen, and who wasn't even a permanent resident when I got my job, I can tell you that it is possible... but only just.

If you have a particular skill that a company in your field really, really, REALLY wants, then they can sponsor you for an H1-B visa and a Technical Assistance Agreement (TAA). The TAA is a State Department/Department of Defense license for a particular company to "export" controlled information to a foreign person. If you are granted a TAA then effectively everything that your co-workers discuss with you is being "exported" from the US to the UK, with you as the sole recipient of the exported information.

Even then, you can't get ANY security clearance until you have Permanent Residency (Green Card), and even then you most likely can't get security clearance until you are a citizen (5 years after you get your GC).

All of this really boils down to the fact that unless the US has a very significant need for you, personally, and your unique skills then you're probably out of luck.
