J1 Visa ending in 3 days-need help

Hello,
I am on a J1 that's about to expire (Jan19th,02). I have a no objection letter and already started the waiver process with the Dept of State.
Is there a way to extend the 30 day grace period due to my special pending waiver case? Or do I have to leave the country and wait outside for the waiver? If that's the case can I come back on a B2-tourist visa to wait for the waiver here in the US. Would that cause a problem in the border or in the future when I apply for an H1B.
Please help.
